I am very saddened by this news. Bill Harrell had one of the sweetest bluegrass voices I've ever heard. Add Don Reno and Fiddlin' Buck Ryan, and they were among the greatest ever. The Angel Band will be that much better off! It's been a tough week all around.

"A Song for Everyone." "I Saw the Master This Morning," "He's Coming Back to Earth Again." Great bands, Carl Nelson, Darrell Sanders. Bill blessed us with some very good music. Harmonies were always so smooth.

Isn't it odd, these deaths come in 3's....
Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson and Bill Harrell

Bill started out in bluegrass as a mandolin player. I remember an interview in Bluegrass Unlimited where he told how he auditioned for the musicians' union, playing Raw Hide with a capo on his mandolin. I think the only time I saw him live with Reno, Ryan, Ed Ferris, he was playing an Ovation guitar; think he had an endorsement deal with Ovation. Not only an excellent rhythm guitarist and singer, but a great front man for the band.

Of all the recently deceased entertainers, Bill Harrell is the only one I ever saw perform (says something about my interest in pop culture I guess). I was impressed with his singing and guitar playing, along with his ability to relate to an audience. He was a musician who was just better than his relative lack of renown would indicate.

I used to attend the winter-time indoor festivals in the Catskills (In The Pines) when they used to run. Bill Harrell entertained the audience at dinner time - just Bill and his guitar - it was great. I had the pleasure of seeing him play with his band earlier. He'll be missed.
RIP, Bill.
He had a knack of blending very well with different singers, be it Don Reno, Larry Stephenson, others. Could always count on the Ovation in later years.
