Well, I would choose the DVD Man Vs Wild if stuck on a desert island. I would more likely starve to death before my picking skills caught up with Thile's from his DVD. ;)

No question for me, it would be Mike Marshall's mandolin fundamentals disc 1. Then by the time I got off the island, I might actually be able to play.

What the heck. You might as well bring Mike Marshall's Mandolin Fundamentals disc 2 so you can learn about chords too.

I'm a big fan of Niles Hokannen "Bluegrass Up the Neck"

By the way, how often can people plan in advance to be stranded on an island?

Dawn Watson's 75 Hot Licks instructional tape/DVD and the songbook Rise Up Singing. A lick a week would last me a year and a half - I'd practice 'em using the songs in a couple of keys and, when rescued, would eat cheeseburgers till I died.

instead of a DVD and the obligatory DVD player, i'd ask for a mess of thick picks; a substantial quantity of "calace"- RW92, carbon steel, round wound, hand-made strings and an inspirational edition of "the little engine that could."

... a fully equipped bathroom would be nice - as would the annual production of any speyside distillery you might care to mention.

need someone to carry your bags?

1 DVD only.....definately, Mike Marshall DVD 2. DVD 1 has alot of very basic stuff but I think the real meat of those video's Is on number 2. I wouldnt wast my time with any video that just had a few tunes on it. But that one video has a weath of technic AND theory to last a thousand tunes worth.

I don't have it yet, but I was thinking that would be a good desert island DVD, since it covers multiple music genres and playing styles.

As far as dessert island DVDs go, Brennan's Bananas Foster recipe is worth the price of this DVD (http://www.amazon.com/Great-Chefs-Desserts-John-Beyer/dp/B001QFYJYQ/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1245704386&sr=1-5).

Butch Baldassari's Bluegrass Mandolin Workshop (Homespun). Actually, it looks like teh new Homespun compilation has pieces from a lot of the DVDs, so that might be the place to start and see whose style you like. Butch was a great teacher, though.

I have Thile's, 2 of Sam Bush's, Chris Henry's and Mike Marshall's fundamentals. I would take Mike Marshall's DVD 1 because it could keep you busy for years ;)

I love the Mike Marshall DVDs but I could remember a lot of the exercises from disc 1. Disc 2 might be good because I'm weak on chord theory and those are fun to play when you're alone. But I think would go with my Sam Bush teaches Monroe; so much nuance there.
