I'm a guitarist/singer who wants to add the sound of mandolin to my recordings. My purpose is more toward a rhythm accompaniment with occasional spotlights. Now having said that I'm not looking for the holy grail of mandolins. (who am I kidding I can't afford it http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif). I'm not looking to pay a whole lot of money but want a decent sound. My range I think would be $400-$800 or so. This site is very comprehensive but very overwelming just the same. Could anyone name off some brand names that might blend well with my Martin?
thanks

The upper end of your budget would get you in range for an used Weber Absaroka, a Weber Hyalite or a
Flatiron A, which are all nice instruments, I am not familiar with the Eastman or Kentucky mandolins but they are in that price range.

Thanks Peter,
I'll go look at those makers right now.

If you're looking for a bluegrass-type of tone, I'd agree with the above. For a more open, hollow tone that can blend beautifully, have a look at Mid-Missouri.

Take a look in the classifieds for Ken Cartwright. He's got some breedlove OF's and OO's. I found them very nice and easier to play for a guitarist.

Mid Missouri, there's a Walnut body M-3 in the classifieds for $399. You can recover your money on resale if it doesn't pan out or you decide to upgrade.

I agree. If the seller will agree to a 48 hour approval period, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the Mid Mo in the classifieds.

I've got a new M-3 wideneck w/hardshell case that sure needs a home. I'd make someone a heck of a deal on it......really!

Thanks for the lead guys. I should have pointed out one other quirk in my selection process. I prefer new instruments. I know that limits my selection. I like to break the instrument in myself I guess.
There is one other consideration as I look at these sites. neck size. I have fairly large hands. From my wrist to the tip of my middle finger is 8 inches long. I'm wondering if a smaller neck might present any problems. Or would the larger necks not really make a difference?
thanks,
William

William,
Take a look at those breedloves from Ken Cartwright in the classifieds. They are new and the breedloves have a slightly wider neck.
