Art in America - David Peters

After at least a year or two I dug this CD out today; what a treasure trove of tasty mandolin licks (and some great guitar too). DP touches on just about every style of mando on this CD.....smooth, toneful and tasty....I need to transcribe some playing of "the transcriber" :) Does anybody know what type of mandolin David played?

BTW If you don't have this CD it's still available; a must have in my book.

Speaking of books; the recent thread about his great book "Masters of Mandolin" and the index that was provided here on the Cafe (thanks again!) reminded me to give it a listen.

too many tunes,
Perry

Nugget A he won at Winfield.

And try to find his Dawgfinger - Blasgrass recording. That is awesome, too.

Right on, 14! David Peters is one of my all time favorite mandolin players, and I really with that I could have met him before he passed. I know that David had two Nuggets, and A and an F, although I been told that he favored the A for its playability. I had the good fortune to recently meet and chat with an old roommate of Davids that had some video footage of him at Winfield in the 90's. It has a lot of jamming (especially swing) and a section where he breaks down 4 or 5 Pat Martino licks that he used a lot in his playing. I'm in the process of transcribing Peter's recorded work from the Art in America as well as some bootleg stuff including the video footage. Would love to do some trading with any of you out there (AlanN, wink, wink) that had the Blasgrass or any other recordings.

The Blasgrass is Dave with four very hip European cats. The recording is a mix - jazz numbers (Earl Klugh's Vonetta - done previously by Rice), swing (Minor Swing), originals. They do Fast Floyd, the Tony Rice tune - better version of it, in my mind. The elec. bass man is superb.

The AIA is great. He picks PoppyLeaf Hornpipe (or Reel), getting this extended string of triplets that I think even Alan Bibey would be challenged by...on 2nd thought, nah :mandosmiley:

One of my favorite cd's of any genre. His second solo on "Lonesome Fiddle Blues" sends chills up my spine every time I hear it.

Both of those CD's are great. Pretty sure I wore Dawgfinger out. They do a funky little number in either 5 or 7 (I think 7) that took me about 6 months to figure out. I think somewhere I also have those videos, Jordan. I'm going to have to go try to find it.....I could maybe bring a copy up to rockygrass if you're interested.

Are you referring to Charlie, when you speak of Dave's old roommate? He told me the story of how Dave died.....truly tragic.

Hey Tbone, definitely bring copies of your videos to RockyGrass and we'll do some trading. Paul Kiteck is the old roommate I talked to, he's a great fiddle player that just moved to Longmont a few months back. He has been showing up at the local jam here in Lyons and I was blown away when I found out he knew and lived with Peters. I've been meaning to go talk with Charlie about David also, might try to do that sometime in the next couple of months. See you in July.

I recently posted a "Wanted" classified for David's material on CD, most notably "Dawgfinger/Blasgrass." In response to this, I was contacted by Sunnie Valentine who is involved with the David Peters Foundation. She asked that I post her e-mail to me on the board - as a reference of information for those seeking out the Masters of the Mandolin book and other works of David's. The message has been pasted below, as per her request:

Thanks to David McCarty for making me aware of your email. If you need an additional copy of "Art in America" the best place to order them is through Elderly Instruments. My mail service simply just sucks, and orders often do not reach me. The next album is a double CD of the material that Dave recorded on 3 cassettes and sold in Japan when he would tour with his band. I think "Live at Ovations" is availble on the WEB as a download. It use to be...perhaps someone out there knows the link? Although I have the rights to his other recordings, I was unable to secure this one, and hence it is available in this manner. Also, I know I've been slow to produce more projects. I finally started also putting out Dave's book of transcriptions "Master's of the Mandolin" through Elderly instruments and they have the CD as well. It is the only outlet I use. The foundation that puts out these products is simply me. I was lucky to find the base materials for these projects. The boo!
k will never go out of print as long as I am living and I am young and don't intend on dying any time soon ! So any rumors of the book being out of print are unfounded. Sometimes there is a delay at Elderly when I have to get more printed. Also, every bit of the money that comes in, goes towards these projects, there is no overhead, no payment to me, or anyone else. Elderly has been very accomodating in the support of this endeavor. So lest I sound like a broken record, or the equivalent of that today, thanks very much for your support and your patience.

Sincerely,
miss sunnie Valentine

PS - I am still looking for Dawgfinger/Blasgrass if anyone can help me out...

Is anyone familiar with "The Texas Rangers"? It's a cassette featuring Dave with Jeff White, Pat Cloud and Tammy Fassaert. Great singing, nice choice of material and, of course, more great mandolin playing by Dave.

Old thread dug up, buyers beware!

Does anyone have the chords to Vonetta? Thanks.

Elderly evidently no longer has Art in America in stock - any other possible sources?
