View Full Version : Please Edit Your Quotes

This isn't a software issue; it concerns the way the software is used. If there's a better place for this post please relocate it, if possible.

Fairly often, members quote entire posts when responding. This is unnecessary, and even self-defeating, as it's a bit off-putting for a reader to slog through that quoted post to find what had inspired the response. It would be helpful to quote just that part to which the new post refers.

There are a few ways to do this, the easiest way being to quote the entire post, then edit out the irrelevant parts. If there are two or more parts in a post to which you are responding, you may want to break that up by enclosing the parts you want to keep with the
protocols and typing your responses between them. This is especially helpful when multi-quoting.

I find it best to be selective - it helps maintain focus, and also the flow of the thread. Also, it's usually unnecessary to include embedded videos and photos when quoting. They take up a lot of room on the page. Lastly, if your post immediately follows the post to which you are responding, there's really no point to quote at all - just hit reply.

Thank you all!

Good luck. The software does it this way by default and although it might be nice to see it most people don't understand what is happening in that code sequence. You'll end up with even more things that look jumbled.

The computers haven't completely taken over - yet! I think if people check it out and try to see how this works they'll get the hang of it pretty quickly. Granted, it means taking a little more time with your post, but it's worth it, IMO. It's like that English teacher that everybody seems to have encountered at some time used to say - neatness counts! ;)

Someone was bound to do it -- I was just lucky enough to read this thread before them. ;)

Don't tell me what to do. Only my wife gets to do that.

I'd rather see folks just posting and answering the questions than worrying about editing their quotes. If they want to so be it, if not it's not a big deal.

By the way, I quoted this because it was a most interesting post and my reply has nothing to do with the content.

Yeah, the whole 'me too' thing after a fully quoted post has been old since the beginning of message boards.

It's not too hard to pick and choose parts of a post to quote, and inserting your comments in-between.

Now, picking Rawhide....that's hard!

I know this is inherently Quixotic, but if some people get the idea that such things are possible, even desirable, then all the smarty-pants-type responses will be worth it. OK, maybe not all ... :))

BTW - Thank goodness the software automatically edits out quotes of quotes. If not for that, threads would be horrifyingly long!

Very funny, Mr. B. You know darn well you've been doing this all along anyway. Harrumph!

And Chris - not my intent to tell anybody to do anything. Just a suggestion, something to keep in mind. ;)

Closing this discussion and moving it out of the support area. Advising others on how to manage their interactions in public forums rarely results in anything less than some infighting. We can do without it. This is not intended to be a criticism of the individual that started the discussion. These things get played out on every forum and always with the same result. As with participation in any public space on the web, tolerance is a handy skill.
