I have a late 60's Japanese Made Electric Mandolin. It has a magnetic pickup in it with tone and volume knobs built in. I recently had it converted from an 8 string to a 4 string so I can bend and slide like a guitarist. It is still tuned GDAE. I use a variety of pedals with it but also play it clean for jazz.

I'm having problems finding the right strings for it, i really don't like the wound D and G, but I'm open to any suggestions. I'm definately looking for a lighter guage but there's so many to choose from.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Magnetic PU only senses steel/iron, maybe some Nickle alloys, but its mostly the core that is being picked up, small guage E is lower mass so not of equal volume output [my instrument, as my experience] lately I readjust the treble side of the pickup a lot closer to the string and it seems to compensate for the lower output, tone knob towards the bass for jazzier sound,
tomasik TI is flat ribbon wound for the G &D ,lightly guaged.
alt: I use heavier mandola strings and that cgda tuning works on 14" scale.

I like 0.09", 0.012", 0.018"w, 0.024"w, & 0.034"w if you want a low C string.

Ted over at www.jazzmando.com sells a set of strings for the Mandobird that will most likely do the trick. Pretty cheap too, someting like $7.
