I posted this on the Monroe Appreciation Society but I thought others might be interested. Seems like a pretty cool idea.

That is a cool site and it has solved a lot of disagreements I've had with friends over BGB so and so and BGB whatzisname. Thanks for posting on the M.A.S. Mandolirious!

This took a lot of work to find all the not so well known Bluegrass Boys. Many you thought were there for years turns out there for only a few weeks. Other who said they were offically Bluegrass Boys because they "wore the hat" turned out to only be a fill in for the day wearing someone else's hat. Hard times or good times Monroe kept a band of somesorts for hundreds of show dates each year.

There are some surprising names on the "fill-in" list.

Indeed my father was a "one night" Bluegrass Boy.......I even have a recording of the event......quite an honor for my father.

Just for the record, Bill Monroe always called his band the "Blue Grass Boys," with three separate words. The music is bluegrass, but the Boys are Blue Grass.

The referenced website has it right, but we seem to mix it up here.

Funny....I just stumbled upon that site two days ago. Interesting stuff indeed!

This is a great list! I checked to see if the one fill-in I knew about was there. Bill Monroe and crew played the East-West Center at the University of Hawaii many years ago. I was in a band called "Bluegrass Hawaii" and our banjo player, Paul Sato, filled in on bass - complete with hat. I looked and there he was! That has to be an obscure factoid!

The date must be wrong, though. It says the concert was in 1984 and that would make me, let's see, 64 years old.

Oh.

Dang.
