I'm in the middle of pumping Fretboard Journal on the Cafe home page and places elsewhere at the moment, so forgive me.

I knew this issue would have a feature on Lynn Dudenbostel and I was looking forward to that. What I didn't know until I opened the issue this afternoon was it would also include:

Picture of Stradolin in an article about Alvin Youngblood Hart
Article and multiple pictures of Israeli mandolin great Avi Avital
Article and picture from Rick Turner about his mandolin building workshops
Feature article on Hamilton do Holanda with plenty of Mike Marshall contained within
Picture of Chris Hillman teaching mandolin at Jorma Kaukonen's camp
Picture of Fred Tackett and his Gibson mandolin in an article about him
Feature article on Paul Buskirk (great!)

In additional to the Dude's article, also a cool mandolin x-ray by Don Dudenbostel on the back page.

There are several more mandolin references and images throughout. Sorry, no banjo pictures in the entire magazine that I can see .

Absolutely one of the finest magazine/journals ever published in the music industry. I've missed a couple of issues and I know I should subscribe.

Thanks for the heads up, Scott.

I can't help but add my two cents. The x-ray shot of a Dudenbostel F-5 on the final page ("Tailpiece") is stunning. Hopefully readers will "get" the inside reference - Don is doing an x-ray of his brother's mandolin, harkening back to when they were kids in the family garage. You can check out more of Don's unique artistry at www.x-rayarts.com. Click on "Contact" and send him an e-mail about how much you appreciate his beautiful work.
Keep on pick'n

What a great value. I find it one of the most well produced periodicals out there in terms of content (formost), presentation, physical qualities (binding, paper weight, etc). I've been lucky enough to grab all of the issues so far and find myself looking through them frequently. I tend to toss other mags after one read.

It always has some of the most interesting and educational articles. Since I subscribe to virtually unlimited internet music service, I try to listen to artists and tunes referenced in the articles as I'm reading. Really adds another dimension to the content.

Have to trip down to the Picken Parlor and pick up this issue and, maybe, pick while I'm there. I'm picky that way.

Of course, the content may not be for everyone, in which case, maybe it is too expensive. But compared to what? Smokes, booze, lottery tickets, mandolin strings, restaurant meals, CDs, gasoline, vegetables...? I think I know what you mean, many things are pricey (even overly so), but bang for the buck, it's pretty affordable.

A great issue! What an incredible magazine for guitar and mandolin lovers. Always fun to see that cardboard envelope in the mail!

The Dudenbostel article was well done. I didn't know how Lynn got into the lutherie world, so it was nice to hear his story. I have never had the pleasure of playing one of his mandolins, but I have played one of his guitars. A very special instrument...

Absolutely one of the finest magazine/journals ever published in the music industry.

I agree whole heartedly; I've even purchased a gift issue here and there hoping to get friends to subscribe. A music mag of this quality deserves support.

Thanks Scott and everyone else!

Each issue sort of takes on a life of its own but this one indeed ended up with a ton of great mandolin content. I'm particularly proud of Nate Nakadate's piece on Paul Buskirk, just because he's someone who wasn't on my radar beforehand. Now I'm scouring eBay for LPs and downloading every mp3 I can find of the guy (and loving them all).

If any of you are interested, we started doing these weekly "talk radio" shows on the internet a few months back. They're basically informal interviews/podcasts where listeners can call in with their own questions, etc. If you can't listen live, you can still download them after like a regular podcast.

Anyhow, this Friday at 1pm PST we'll be interviewing Mike Marshall on the air. And the Friday after, Lynn Dudenbostel has agreed to be our guest. If anyone wants to ask either a question or two, please call in (or just shoot me an email) and we'll make sure it gets asked. There's a show from a couple weeks back featuring Roland White that had some great stuff in it, too. (Sorry, in advance, about the spotty sound quality).

Thanks guys!

Just got my issue, and I'm very impressed. But I do have a question.

Who is luthier Vergílio Lima? I was under the impression that Hamilton's bandolims were built by Tércio Ribeiro? Was this an error in the translation or something?

I've even talked to Ham about Tércio, but never heard of Vergílio before? Did Vergílio build Ham's 8-string bandolim?

I found Vergílio Lima (http://vergiliolimaluthier.blogspot.com/) on the web, but see no mention of Hamilton's bandolim. But still interesting to discover another 10-string maker.

OK. I got my issue and like others before it, have devoured it. My personal favorite part, the inside the back cover photo negative of the Dudenbostel X-ray. Boy Howdy. I would love to get a poster sized print of that. So cool.

Don Dudenbostel sells prints of his work, including the Xrays. I'm sure if you contact him, you can work something out on getting a print of the Xray mandolin. http://www.x-rayarts.com The mandolin is #41 completed in November '07. A fern with a one piece back, carpathian spruce top and "Crusher" graduations. Full size pickguard and James tailpiece.

Been forgetting to subscribe for a year or two...finally pulled the trigger. looking forward to my first issue. I'm a big fan of Alvin Youngblood Hart. Can't say I agree with all his positions on the blues, but I sure do enjoy his playing. He is an exceptionally talented guitarist and singer.

Well, I´d like to see a picture of that Strad-O-Lin of yours. Being overseas and other issues hold the mag out of reach for me.
