I'm entering a mandolin competition in November, and I was gonna just play whatever popped into my head, but now I want to actually place. I hope. The judges are usually traditional fiddle player kinda guys. And I need something traditional that's NOT Blackberry Blossom, which just about everyone does. I'd appreciate some suggestions, so that I have time to learn the tunes. I need 2, I think. Any ideas? I'm still mostly new to mando and bluegrass stuff, I come from classical background, so I can read music or tab, if I can find it... Thank you! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

I like "over the waterfall" . I don't think it's done to death.

I remember reading somewhere here that one of the cafe members won a competition with Soldier's Joy and Red Haired Boy.
The judges were more interested in how clean the picking was, rather than how fancy the tunes were.
The thread and details are here (http://www.mandolincafe.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=15;t=16517;st=25) scroll down to the entry posted: July 19 2004, 17:33

One that's really good, and hardly ever done is Grey Eagle. I also like Baltimore Jonny, if it doesn't have to be a fiddle tune, or just pick and choose any Monroe instrumental.

My 3 contest tunes are always, cattle in the cane, bluegrass stomp and billy in the lowground, I have no idea if they're effective or not because I've never won!
