I'm in the midst of a tight month and was talking today about putting one of my guitars up on ebay to take up some slack. My wife is pretty supportive of everything I do musically, but in this case accidentally let her true feelings show. She begged me not to sell the guitar - then said, "Why don't you sell one of your mandolins - you've got 3 of them!"

And I have 5 guitars....

Oh man! I have sorta the reverse; I 've played guitar for 25 years and get a nice response from folks who's opinion matters to me (other musicians that is). I play jazzy type blues and know the fingerboard well. The mandolin is new to me and although I am in love with it, it don't love me yet.
My wife's opinion; that I sound so much better on the mando.
Zat a slap at my 6 string playing or a compliment to my mando?

Why don't you ask your wife to sell some of her knicky-knackity-doodie-dads that she clutters up the end-tables with, and hear what she says? (Hey, I'm a lady and I collect ceramic cows, plus I play mando, so I can relate to both sides of the coin.):p

They (non-gender-specific reference to non-musician-spouses) just don't understand that one each kind of instrument you play is never enough. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Midmando,

I bought a Martin Guitar (I figured it to be my last guitar) and for some unknown reason, began my mandolin collection (nothing too fancy, just well made low end, japanese, etc.). So, I find myself fussing over my collection, playing, tuning, practicing, passing the time, etc. (again). So, what I play my mandolin(s), I hear, "why don't you play that nice guitar you bought"? I don't know what it is, but I love to play it and she hates to hear it. Maybe opposites do attract, we've been like this for 17 years - ha.

I tell my wife,

"I believe a man should find one good woman that he can spend the rest of his life with."

I also tell her,

"Mandolins are not women."

So far, it's working.
