Hey Folks

I've been searching high and low with no luck for some sort of diagram of scales on the mandolin the same way there are many for guitar. I'm looking for a photo/image of the fret board with dots where the notes of the scales are. I suppose I could look at a guitar one and flip it around, but I figured I'd ask here first to see if anyone has things like this lying around on their computer.

Thanks.

This (http://www.studybass.com/tools/chord-scale-note-printer/) was one of the first hits when I searched for "mandolin scale diagram."

NPeffer,

Start here (http://www.banjolin.co.uk/mandolin/fretboard.htm) and then go to Ted Eschliman's FFcP (http://jazzmando.com/ffcp.shtml) pages.

The first will give you a picure and a chart, and the second a mind concept and practice routines to get your brain and fingers (and ears) around that fretboard.

Good Luck

FFcP

Also Greg Horne's intermediate mando book has some extensive and very well laid out scale maps.

Highly recommended interactive software program: Mando ModeExplorer (http://www.grovelandsoftwarelabs.com/modeexplorerweb/home/mandomodeexplorer.aspx)
Very much worth the price of admission!

Of Course there is the DIY learning technique .

A) Learn how to spell the scale in the chosen key,

adding the sharp and flat as you veer away from C major .

Flats by 4ths in this order >> B E A D G C F << sharps by 5ths in the reverse order

then, .. B) find the place on the fingerboard that that note is located .

made a little picture of the black keys and where they are not, in my mind ..

since the e>f and b>c [keyboard] pattern of no black note between them

is why the #/b is added when beginning scale from a different note,
to keep the pattern (spelling) consistent .

basic music theory class .. dismissed ..

NPeffer,

I was just about to go off to a Scottish heritage festival when I replied to your post and forgot to be self promotional!

I posted a couple of items that might help here (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50926).

I hope they help.

I'm not sure that "flipping around a guitar one" will be much help at all. Go for the sites and books offered by others here.

NPeffer, you have a PM - Just as a note,i have on my PC a PDF file which opens with Adobe Reader. It has all sorts of stuff on it -chords,double stops, moveable scale patterns. I've sent it to quite a few 'Cafe members (it was sent to me by one of our fellow members) & if anyone wishes to have it,send me a PM with your home e-mail address & i'll send it on. I wish there was a way of adding a PDF file to a 'Cafe post - is there ??,
Ivan;)
