Happy Mother's day to our Mom's, the mother's of our children and all the Mom's on the Café. Here's to all the mom's who support their kids' (and husband's) musical interests and suffer through awful recitals and get rewarded with well played pieces. Here's to the mom's who foisted violins, clarinets, and french horns on us and sowed the seeds that would bloom into mandolins later in life.

It's already post mother's day here (very early Monday morning).

I lost my mom after a long battle with cancer in January of '08, so this is the second mother's day without her.

Working as a single mom, going to graduate school and raising two kids, she bought me a classical guitar when I was about eight. She knew I had a love for music and was trying to help me find a way to get it out.

Turns out that wasn't the time or the place, and I never got serious about learning a musical instrument until my early forties.

Never too late, I guess. It's a little harder to learn theory and licks now than it would have been at twelve, but I'm loving it.

Thanks, mom, for seeing that in me and helping to bring it out.
