If you owned a MF5 differance would having a Mt add to your life?

Already, have a MF5 :), I am thinking of a 2nd mandolin for travel.

My MF5 travels all over by air, N.A., Europe. I bought it to play, not to decorate my house. TBS, I imagine that an MT2 would be quite similar judging by the one I've heard. All Collings are quite acceptable in sound.

Actually it would subtract from your life. First you'd be missing about 2 grand and then you'd be missing a strap hangar.

If you're looking for a beater an MT would more than fit the bill. I played on one for a few minutes and aside from the generalizations about Collings having excellent fit and finish, this mandolin had a real presence. It was powerful and toneful.

aren't the materials different?

So, by what logic would an MT be a better "travel" mandolin than an MF5? The cases are virtually identical in length and breadth...

My MT2 is a fine quality instrument! Able to stand on it's own in the presence of it's F-style siblings. Why not consider a good travel case (like a Calton) and play what you have and obviously like???

If you just want to buy another mandolin, have at 'er... :)

I think they have different materials for the top. The mf5 is red spruce and I believe the MT is engelman. I might be wrong tho.

I have an MT and it is warmer than the Collings I've played with red spruce. On the other hand the red spruce instruments have a stronger mid range and cut through the mix stronger. Apples/Oranges. I love them both.

As a travel mando it's less of a loss ~$1600 for a used MT vs $5K+ for a lost/damaged MF5. It seems prudent to me.

Quite a few of the recent intruments reported stolen or missing here on the site have been from home robberies and break-ins. Does it also then seem prudent to own only less expensive instruments if you have to leave them at home?

Let's face it; grief or harm can come to an instrument anywhere; car, home, airport, workplace, gig site, etc.

A Calton case is excellent prudence when carrying a mandolin with you. Think of all the working musicians who carry valuable instruments in them regularly. A lot of classical musicians don't even use cases as good as a Calton, and they carry around instruments that cause an MF5 to pale in a cost comparison.

Little bit warmer, rounder tone with the Engelmann top on the MT, but they should be in the same Collings ballpark tonally. It will also feel very much like the MF5 neck wise. If you want something similar for a reasonable sum, the MT would be a great choice. If you want a sharper distinction from the MF5 tonally, you might look at a Gibson A9, a Weber, or something else.

Hey TM! If you like Collings' mandolins, you'll love their mandolins! You can't go wrong, if you're looking at another one for backup/travel, whatever. They're pretty consistent in fit, finish, and sound, although the (lacquer-finished) MT models I've played are missing a certain 'je ne sais quois' that is there in the MF5's.

What about MT2's?
