Yes and thank you. I just don't see the use in trashing someone like that. There are certainly more diplomatic ways to say you don't like something.

· Avoid flaming or trolling – posts intended to create discord, antagonize others or create general mayhem. Be polite and courteous at all times. We expect spirited discussions and widely varying opinions that some may even find offensive, but exercise caution. A good rule of thumb is don't say anything on the message board that you wouldn’t say to someone in person.

Taken from the posting guidelines. I fail to see how calling someone's work "disgusting" is being polite and courteous.

In any case the ad was ended with no bids.

It seemed to be a nice mandolin and we have several members here who know Mr. Horner and like them.

But also I will add that -- with all due respect to both sides -- I don't think a person saying he was "disgusted" with a mandolin is over the top - but that's my opinion.

I realize when it comes to mandolins many of us are protective, defensive and opinionated -- I admit to it myself.

I tend to get "irritated" with all the attacks on some of the larger, historic mandolin making companies.

Many of these attacks are not related to a mandolin or any instrument specifically but they rather are seem to be generic and all inclusive -- i.e., directed toward the company, its employees, and/or its history. "Acme mandolins are junk -- or the like."

In this case, an opinion was registered against two specific mandolins that were both owned at one time by the complainer.

The complainer was said he was disgusted with the mandolins -- not sure that means he was saying Mr. Honer's work was disgusting per se or in general.

So it seemed like a pretty reasonable emotion and not a violation of anything -- again IMO.

I have helped promote Mr Horner's mandolins and some are better than others aesthetically, but I have never played one that did not sound good. Although, as with anything handmade, some are better than others when you using chisels and knives. This was true of Mr Hutto's mandolins in the 80's and is generally true of handmade products.

The problem with using a word like "disgusted" is that it does not help nor does it hurt anyone. Being disgusted is such an ill defined term or discription that it becomes easy to write off as a disgruntled consumer who may have had an argument with the builder, bought a used and abused instrument, that they are not a good enough player to make an adequate judgement, or that in fact they got hold of two really bad instruments which is unlikely based on what I have seen out of several dozen F5's and A5's.

Since he has moved several F5's out of the shop in the past six months forcing me to give up my loaner, I would say that this critique will not hurt him locally.

Can you speak to why you were so displeased? Im shopping for a mandolin and I was considering this one. Or can any one offer pro's and con's .

I too would like to know what displeased you so much about these mandolins. Did they sound terrible, poor workman ship? I would have thought if someone was willing to trade two mandolins for one that something was amiss.
