If you like that get Kenny and Amanda Smiths newest release

The closest thing I have heard of an Adam Steffey clone is Aaron Ramsey and also Jason Burleson with Blue Highway....where do you think Shawn Lane learned a lot of that stuff? I have some cool jams of Jason, me, and some other pickers that all picked together over the years. He can pull Adam all day long! Of course, Jason can pick everything quite well and his hero has always been Mike Marshall on mandolin.
Not to take anything away from Tom Adams, but I always thought Jason Burleson had that tough banjo sound going, over the top! Speaking of Kenny Smith, he does a monthly lesson at a banjo picker's house near home and I'm gettin' the invite next time he's here, should be a kick.

Well, Jason's hero on banjo (and I think it is obvious) is Ron Block!

Shawn Lane was a great picker/Player long before Blue Highway though.

Steffey does eat it up on Studebaker. I tabbed out his breaks to "Studebaker" and "Bill Cheatam". I worked up Studebaker to where I could play along at speed (back when I had mucho time to practice!), and I came to the following conclusions:
1. His mando-friendly positions using open strings in B are fairly easy on the fingers and efficient to do quickly (alternating first finger, third finger, open fairly often); 2. He can execute up and down slides so cleanly, it's amazing; and 3. He's got some big mitts. I had to use the pinky in places where he wouldn't.

Hey Bradley, I know that Shawn was great before Blue Highway. He just didn't play nearly as much like Steffey as he does now. For example, the break he takes on "Canadian Bacon" is the exact break Steffey used to play on that tune back with Dusty Miller and I actually have some jam tapes from years ago that we played that tune on and Jason played that exact same break. I am just saying that Jason has given Shawn a "few" licks over the years.

And he can also rip some major fiddle breaks! His brother Charlie is an excellent mando player also.

Hey Jeremy,
I took your input as " I am just saying that Jason has given Shawn a "few" licks over the years."
I didnt mean to sound confontational.....might have came off wrong, sorry if I did.

Don't worry Bradley, I didn't take it as confrontational at all! #A lot of times on the message board I guess I sound confrontational and I really am not (well not most of the time!). #I just have strong opinions! #How about some Steffey? #

You know I absolutely love his playing. However I cut my "bluegrass teeth" listening to Doyle Lawson and Skaggs style of playing. I can sit down and figure out Steffeys stuff but have a hard time playing that style when jamming or taking a break. I always revert back to the "safety zone" should I say.
I really wish that Adam would come out with some instructional stuff.I mean for goodness sakes I bought his signature mandolin shouldnt it sound like his http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

The two biggest influences on my playing are very very different in style -- Monroe and Steffey. Of course there are other fabulous players too numerous to mention that I listen to and try (keyword: try) to emulate, Shawn Lane being one. BTW, I just uploaded Adam Steffey's break to Whiskey Before Breakfast to Mandozine, in Tabledit format. He played it on the Bluegrass 95 CD. Not excessively flashy or hot, just very tasteful as Adam always is.

That new Kenny and Amanda Smith cd kicks a$$. I had no idea that Huber rocked the banjo like that. It would be a blast to throw a chop behind that....
