I live in Santa Monica and would like to find a mandolin luthier to adjust the action on my Prucha F Fern. Can anybody tell me a trusted luthier?
Thanks,
Rick

What about McCabe's? They might not be "mandolin luthiers" but I'd think they could adjust action. Did you have a bad experience there or something?

McCabes would be fine for an action set up. #I did have a questionable repair experience there once. #They replaced the nut on my cheap import and they did a poor job of fixing the finish around the nut. #but that's been my only bitch in 30 years of patronage.

Larry Brown is by far the best Mandolin guy in So Cal, his shop is in Culver City (310) 397-4821.

I second Larry--great guy to boot. He might be hard to get ahold of since he is so in demand. Just be persistent, he's worth it.

Larry Brown has a great reputation and should do a good job. Also, you might check out the Blueridge Pickin' Parlor to see who they use for repairs. I know they focus on mandolins and should be able to do set up work for you.

The Blue Ridge Pickin' Parlor uses Kenny Blackwell for their repairs. He's also the great mandolin player in 'The Laurel Canyon Ramblers'.
If Kenny is too busy I would recommend "Neely Guitars". David Neely:323/850-7043 You'll find him opposite the music industry's 'Pep Boys', upstairs of 'Mesa Boogie', and a really swell guy, to boot (also worth noting that he's not a drinker..)
Good luck, lad.

Well, i had to take the plunge and see the 'doctor'. #My mando was in its case and fell over and did a flat belly flop with the case top hitting the floor. #I opened it up and found that the neck heel had popped up a bit (more!)from the body and the rim had seperated from the back at the heel block. #ARRGGGH ! my earlier hesitation about doing an elective neck angle adjustment has turned into required full blown surgery.
so i gave Larry Brown a call. #swell guy, but he said he was a bit swamped. #he recommended David Neely. #so that's where i went. #David was confident about a fix. #he said it would be a few weeks. #we'll see.
#
Mandopixie, david says to say hello. #said you be entertained by that.
