I was listening to the 4-CD Monroe set this weekend, and there were a bunch of instrumental tunes that stuck out and made me remember why I liked bluegrass so much in the first place.

What stuck out most were tunes like:

Pike County Breakdown
Get Up John
Dusty Miller
Long Bow

These tunes really get at it, whatever "it" is, and sometimes I listen to radio-friendly bluegrass and it really turns me off because it is either hokey, hillbilly-like, or just plain pop country.

So to those of you who like the hardcore-stuff, are there any modern bands that really attack that old aggressive, style out there. If there are, I'm not hearing em, so let me know!

Not exactly sure what you mean, but you might check out The Bluegrass Brothers. #They have a new recording out called "Church Of Yesterday" and it has that good old traditional bluegrass drive on it.

Now I'll probably get flamed for the this, but I still say that King Wilkie gets my vote for one of the best new hard core bluegrass bands.

I would also add Open Road and the new recording by David Davis & The Warrior River Boys to this list as well.

I agree that King Wikie is a good hard core bluegrass band. But I must add Del McCoury as well.

What about Rock County...they Rock (ha ha)

They feature Don Rigsby who is a traditional mando player and a great tenor voice...Not to mention Glen Duncan, who is a awesome fiddle player

As far as a tune..."The Old Homeplace" by JD Crowe and the boys still does it for me. That perhaps defines some of Skaggs' best mando playing...really bouncy feel going on atthat time
