Hello!
Been a member for some time by now but do not post very frequently I'm afraid.:sleepy:
I recently aquired, what I think is, a very nice bowlback which actually is playable. (Not the common case with the typical bowlbacks you see for sale in Sweden where I live.) Not an instrument to disturb your neighbours with though, if you get me.;)
I have searched the internet and fond a similar, but even more ornate, for sale, but that's it. Nothing more.
Anyone here has anything to tell about the Globe Musical Instrument Co.?
Is it America made?
Imported?
Age?

The lable reads:
Globe Musical Instrument Co.
successor to
THE ITALIAN MANDOLIN MTG CO
NEW YORK
THE ORPHANE
No 3354

Will appreciate anything anyone can tell.

What kind of strings is suitable for this kind of mandolin? Nickel-steel? Are there some kind of special strings available, kind of like the manouche strings that are meant for Selmer type guitars?

Looks nice! I think Globe was American-made and most likely a distributor's label. So it's hard to say who really made it as there was a lot of selling of parts and sub-contracting of construction in both New York and Chicago. Age wise, these were popular in America from the 1890's, dwindling down in the 20's. The peghead style with the front plate is a bit unusual. To me it seems like the aesthetic of the first part of the mandolin craze, but I could easily be mistaken.

Oh, and you do need light strings meant for classical mandolins... (bronze) GHS A240 or (steel) Dogal Calace Dolce are two common options

Mugwumps (http://www.mugwumps.com/AmerInstMkr.html#G.) has a Chicago listing for Globe Music Co. I have a Mandolin with The Globe Stamped on the fretboard. Here's a thread on mine. (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21450&highlight=Globe) You can see The Globe on the fretboard in post #3. Jim Garber provides some excellent information that they may still be in business.
