It seems like some places offer discounts on many sets ordered and can be worth while considering cost savings. How do you store your strings for maximum life?

I don't worry about how old they are. Who knows how long ago they were manufactured? They may have been sitting in a warehouse or on the dealer's shelves for months or more. Some strings come in a sealed plastic package which, theoretically, keeps them fresh. Most are in glassine envelopes inside a plastic package. These don't allow much air to reach the strings inside and I don't believe it makes much difference. After you start to play them and the oils from your hands are on them they do deteriorate. Peter Ostroushko said on Co-Mando that he changes some of his strings as frequently as every three years. That spare set he has in his case has been waiting a long time and I can't tell when listening that they are old. #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
