Really nice! One of my favorite Zep songs (well, actually "cover song" since Jimmy didn't write it). Thanks!!

Now how about Cortez the Killer? <ducking ...>

That was way cool. After hearing what you did with it I'd love to hear Bron-yr-Aur.

Truly lovely Jim. Thank you very much for giving it a whirl. The combination of your Kimble, your talent and somg excellent classic rock selections make for some great inspiring videos. Thanks again for sharing them.

I was thinking of Bron-Yr-Aur, but Bron-Yr-Aur stomp would be a good one, too.

Excellent performance, Jim. Love the octave.

Really nice and clean Jim! (I'm partial to the fingerpicking on the original, but it translates nicely to the Octave). What's the tuning? I know on guitar I used to lower the E to a D.

The original tune was in DADGAD tuning. I tuned the octave to a variant of sawmill:

aA-dD-AA-DD

the lower case letters indicate the higher pitched string of the octave pair.

I've really come to like this as an alternate tuning for octave. It was the tuning I used for the recent octave workup of Whiskey Before Breakfast I did on YouTube.

Jim - as always, you just nailed it.

Here's a comment/observation on the video itself. I notice a proliferation of videos in which the performer choses not to show their face. I assume in many cases they want the viewer to focus on the instrument or song. I guess close ups of fingers are good for instructional videos, but in general I would much rather see someone's face.

...I guess that's why I hardly ever post a video on UTOOB <grins>.

5 Stars my friend!

My reasoning for just showing the mandolin is multifold:

1) First, and not necessarily the most important, I ain't George Clooney :)

2) I do want to clearly show the instrument so if someone wants to learn the tune from what I'm doing, then this should help. I find the rest of the background a distraction.

3) I don't really have the nicest of music rooms, so it helps block a lot of that out.

4) And probably the most important to me, I want to create something that goes a little beyond the standard webcam fare. On some of my videos, I "letterbox" to give the widescreen feel (which almost makes the mandolin seem a bit "mythical") and add some reverb. I look at it as being a performance or event, rather than some guy in front of a webcam.

But, truthfully, it is weird to not see a guy's face, though it may be better than seeing a weird guy's face :)

Hey Jim, On the positive side of the video equation: How are you recording that sound? I know the Kimball's a hot instrument, and that's really clear in the video. So are you close miking it, or do you have a pickup in the Kimball? I see from your home page that you have a degree in audio, which is not surprising here. Sound quality is great.

Yeah, but he sucks on the mandolin!

And judging by The Perfect Storm, Clooney's beard is much grayer. His late aunt Rosemary could really sing, though.

Just using the built in microphone of my iMac, which is a pretty decent one for what it is. A lot of it really are the Kimbles.
