Hey all,

At the end of the article that Scott posted on the main cafe board, the article mentions that Jones played the mandolin....here's the quote...

[Indeed, much of Zeppelin's third album is acoustic and features Jones on the tiny 12-stringed instrument. His affection for it helps explain his feelings toward Nickel Creek and Thile.]

12 strings eh? I guess that's the difference in being a reporter for "The Plain Dealer" or "The New York Times". Wait a minute. The Times might have made the whole story up.

In noticed that and the next article on the main page, about Rigel, refers to "...Chris Teeley of Nickel Creek...".

Jones did play a tight mandolin solo at the Mutual Admiration Society show here in Portland. He wasn't Thiele but then...

John Paul Jones has been known to play all kinds of Basses with stange string configurations (10 strings, 12 strings). In an article with Bassics magazine (issuue 30), he says that he played the mandolin on "Going to California" and "That's the way" when with Led Zepplin. Evidentally he has quite a few mandolins, including this tripple neck beast http://www.andymanson.co.uk/entry_page.htm

oops click on that link and go to the photo gallary and mandolins.

Andy Manson makes all his mandolins and Hugh Manson makes all his bass guitars. Cool looking intruments.

There's an article on CMT about Jones I read yesterday that I decided probably wasn't good content for the Cafe front page but may be of interest to some of you. I'd not read that much about him but was plenty aware of who he was. What a cool guy. Hitting the road with a bunch of 20 something kids on a tour bus. Guy has to be in his late 50s and truly enjoying the music.

It should be noted that John Paul Jones was a student at the Mandolin Symposium last week...He performed a piece with the Dawg at the recital on Friday night...He played a long-necked instrument...I'm not sure if it was an octave or a 'cello. Sounded cool, though.

It may have been an octive but tuned like a bouzouki. He had the 2 lower pairs tuned in octives.
