View Full Version : strings for a mid-mo
Hi to all mid-mo owners, I've got a really nice-sounding M-1 with a wide neck, the strings it came with were GHS something or other and here in Melbourne I'm not sure what is available strings-wise. Do any of you have suggestions about strings that you think work well on a mid-mo?

If you are looking for a quiet, but very mellow, sound you might try the Thomastick-Infeld mediums. They are expensive, but they last a long time. They have really good bass and mids, but they can be a little thin on the treble end, IMHO. They are very easy on the fingers also. If you want more volume and/or don't want to spend nearly as much, I really like the GHS Silk and Steels. These are great all-round sting set for flat tops and reasonably priced.
BTW, I will be driving right by the Mid-Missouri factory in Columbia, Missouri tomorrow morning. I'll say hello for you as I drive by!
i have a similar instrument, and i have been thrilled with the sambush strings- don't let the first strummin shock you. they break in pretty quick

I use Darco lights, made by Martin. They are reasonably priced. Mid Missouris come strung up with GHS lights, with .010 for the E string. There is a non adjustale truss rod, so they may be structurally OK with mediums.

I've got an M-11 and have had very good results with Martin M400's. In my experience, they hold up well and give me a great sound as well as being reasonably priced.
I just took off a set of worn Martin M400's bronze wound and liked them a lot. The mando is an Old Wave oval-A and they gave a nice sparkly sweet tone with nice sustain. I too am curious about the Martin Darco; they are soooo inexpensive.

IMO-- you haven't lived (well, string-wise anyway) until you've tried Thomastik Infelds. Put a set mediums (it says "mittel" on the package) and experience a whole new way of mando pickin' life.
Hyperbole aside, they last *much* longer (like about 4 to 6 times the life of bronze wounds), sound a lot better (my opinion), and are easier and more comfortable to play (lower string tension and wonderfully smooth flat wound strings).

I used to own a mid-mo M1. I really liked the GHS silk & bronze strings.
What did you like about the silk & bronze? I put a set of silk & steel on a Colings MT2 to help tone down its jangle and they subdued that nicely.
I put a set of TI heavies on a Phoenix to put some more "wood" in the crystaline tone and it worked but the TI's lack interesting harmonics.

I have really enjoyed the d'adderio flat-wound FT-74s.
