If you budget is limited, and you are sure that you want a bunch of different effects (as opposed to just overdrive and wah, for example,) these little things are the way to go. There are always tons of them on craigslist for cheap, at least in Portland, OR. I'll say this though - there's a reason people sell them eventually. You might start hearing the weaknesses in the multi-effect units, or might get frustrated with the interface, even though both are getting better all the time. I used to play a similar thing years ago, and over time have built a pedal board piece by piece, both for sound, and addmittedly for fun.
I'd say it's a great way to play with lots and lots of different sounds to get a sense of what you like and are interested in, but if you want a small number of specific different effects, try to find a music store where you can play five different wahs, or delays, or overdrives, etc, and spread your money out over time on just the things you want. As a bonus, well made stand alone pedals will hold resale value much better than a digital multi-effects unit.
Good luck!

I've got the RP500 and got for the exact reason Christian stated. I don't know enough about effects to make sound decisions on buying pedals. For the moment I'm having fun figuring out different combinations of effects. So far I'm happy with it.
