I would imagine a mandolin with mahogany or rosewood would have a deeper, lower tone than maple.

I own one of those Weber's. I call mine a Wanne-be-Jellystone. It sounds awesome. It plays awesome. I am one happy picker.

From what I've sampled, the Gibson will sound 'drier' and 'crisper', while the Weber's tone is 'sweeter', and has a 'rounder' low end. (Don't her I said she has a 'rounder low end'. I'll never live that down. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif )

IMO, it'll take on an F-9, but they're definately in the same league. Try to play 'em both, then follow your heart.

Enjoy the hunt!

Being that I used to work for a Weber dealer and I did own an F-9 for a short period while my Bush was being refinished, I would say that the F-9 definitely had a much deeper tone than the Weber's. Even the Fern I had in stock didn't have the bass and woody tone of the F-9.

Of course, it should be noted that I am a major Gibson freak since Charlie is now there! And for very good reason!

I agree with Benignus' assessment. I think he hit the nail right on the head, but tone is so relative.
