Both have great voices, but I'm not sure I'd put them in the rock section.

I was listening to Ryan Bingham and I really liked him. I don't know how long he's been around but he's new to me.

The new Doves album is first-rate, althought there is absolutely no mando content. I'm also really enjoying the debut from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart which basically sounds like an intoxicating mix of My Bloody Valentine, Ride, and the Jesus and Mary Chain.

However, in terms of acts with some cool mando content, then I HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY recomend checking out Axton Kincaid. If I could be in a dream band, it would likely sound a lot like these guys. They're a west coast alt-country/roots rock act that is the best current act I've discovered this year. Kate Howser, their singer and guitarist, has a great voice and writes very solid songs and the mandolin is featured on almost of their tracks. Based on their myspace photos, Jennifer Daunt (their mando player) plays an Eastman 505 :mandosmiley: She's also really pretty

I've got absolutely no connection to these folks at all but I've become a pretty big fan of their two albums and when I fall for a band, I tend to become somewhat zealous in trying to spread the word. So, I encourage anyone who loves excellent songwriting, great female vocals and solid harmony singing, and downright fun and twangy music to give them a listen at http://www.myspace.com/axtonkincaid

I'm almost willing to bet that anyone who checks them out will really like what they hear.

Check out some Elizabeth Cotten, or maybe Sister Rosetta Tharpe. That'll take you in a new direction!

Victoria Vox (http://www.victoriavox.com/) has as much of my musical attention as I've given any artists since the late 80s. She's not a mando player, but she plays uke and guitar. Graduated from Juliard in songwriting, and so she writes great tunes.

Eric Skye (http://www.ericskye.com/) is another artist I've been getting into. He plays jazz on a couple of Santa Cruz flat tops (a 00 and a dread). Really smooth and fluid player. He's utterly unafraid in a live show to go way out on an improvizational limb too.

Enjoy!
Daniel

Don't know if I'd call it new music, but it's new to me. Got the latest disc from the Gourds, which has sort of sparked a Gourds renaissance with me, hittin' the back catalog. They probably have the most mando content of anything that I'm listening to heavily. A guy I jam with cut me a mixed cd with a lot of Jackie Greene and West Coast Grand. Both write great songs, been jamming along with them on the mando.

Speaking of gourds -real gourds - I found a band from Australia called Totally Gourdgeous. (http://profile.myspace.com/TotallyGourdgeous) Their founder, Penelope Swales, makes instruments from dried gourds - the bodies that is, then she attaches necks etc. She plays mandolin but mostly guitar, mandolin duties being handled mostly by the fiddler. The rhythm section is gourd bass and a really light drum kit, mostly tambourine, which I suspect gets played like the way the guy from the subDudes did. Their instruments sound really nice; she has learned her craft well. They wear very colorful clothes, and I expect they must be a lot of fun in concert. I like all the songs at their myspace page, which is rare. They have three CDs out, none of which are available there and amazon hasn't heard of them. This may take a little hunting to track them down, but I'm gonna.
