Hi,
I'm looking for a good stool to play mando on in my music room at home, and before I just but whatever's at my local furniture store I thought I'd see what you recommmend.
What do you sit on while you play? I know arms aren't needed but it seems like a small back might help. A swival seat sounds cool as well.
Any suggestions?
Thanks, Larry

The pickin' chair, is that the one that looks like a rocking chair with no arms on it? They look comfy. But I think I'd want a padded seat for my padded sitter. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

The Pickin' chair that Tony sells (I think Elderly sells them as well) has cushions for both the back and the seat in a variety of patterns.

anything that forces you to sit relatively upright, and doesent have arm rests.

I know whenever I use the stool, I'm supposed to put the lid down when I'm finished!
A fella told me never stand up when you can sit down, and never sit down when you can lay down. My favorite pickin' seat is a Serta perfect sleeper.

my favorite chair for playing is this bright orange plastic "bucket" chair from the 70's. i found it in the trash, and it lives in the band shack. i can sit in that thing and play for 4 hours without getting uncomfortable.

I use one of those little wooden, 22"-high, two-step step ladders--is just the right height, gives me a place to raise up my left foot when needed, is light-weight and it conveniently folds up for carrying. #I even use the little thing for most performances. #I have to explain that I am relatively short and have a scrawny butt--with those physical characteristics the ladder is actually comfortable...but I don't know whether it would be comfortable for most.

My computer chair--I just drop the arm rests. Sometimes, I will sit with my legs folded under me. Otherwise, its the couch. I hope to save up enough D'Addario points for one of their stools, but my back can't go long without support.

The living-room sofa... I'm tall and it's a low sofa, so my knees are higher than my hips #when sat on it. My mando nicely rests on my lap then! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Thanks everybody. We're moving into our first house soon and I'll actually have a room just for my stuff (mando, guitars, amps, bicycles, records, tapes, ect.).
I may pick up a basic stool for the room (same height as my music stand), then I can still play on the couch, porch, etc. Maybe someday I can invest in the "Pickin' Chair" - it looks really good (but $$$).

Yes, that's it: Stool Tour 2004. My wife came to the rescue one Christmas with a sturdy, armless, height adjustable, swivel office chair. Also I have a folding wood and aluminum stool with a fold out foot rest I found at IKEA, a Sweedish home furnishing outlet store (www.ikea.com) They're just perfect for gigs, etc. If you don't see them on line make sure to call. Everybody asks us about these when they see them and they're not real expensive.

I use the black, aluminum fold-ups that 'looter turned me onto, you can find 'em at Rite-Aid & such sometimes. They have a round seat & small back support right where ya need it and sit at just the right height, for me at least, and they're very light.
But as a sidenote, lately I've found standing gives me more freedom of movement so I reserve sittin' mostly for when I'm just noodlin' or too lazy to stand.

nothing like a firm stool, i'm making one now, should be out tomorrow just after coffee. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Unless I'm recording something that I want to be as good as I can make it, I prefer a recliner. #One of the attractions of the mandolin is they are small enough to play in any position -- including reclining.
When I'm playing seriously -- which I try to avoid -- a medium height stool where I can put one or two feet up is my preference. #I play an A style and seldom use a strap, so that changes things a bit.
I sit on a stool i just recently got. Its easy to carry to gigs and easy just to play around on. I also like to sit on the swing on the front porch and pick away!
Ditto mandroid. #Stool talk and coffee do tend to stimulate peristalsis. #
Here's a serious question that I just drug further down the sewer. #Please accept my sorries.
How about a nice cheap folding chair with a padded seat, you can find those at Target for cheap. #Or heck, until you can afford one of those pickin' chairs, just put a pad on one of your own folding chairs, they have that nice foot bar for your foot(go figure) and it's about the right height if you're over 4' tall. #Anything without arms will do. #I'm not picky. #But I'm trying to learn http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif
