I'm not sure which place to post this, so if the moderators think it belongs somewhere else... please move it!

As I posted a couple of days ago, I'm in Austin for a couple of days.

My son, Tommy Shultz, recently started interning at The Congress House (www.congresshouse.com) recording studio here in Austin. His regular job is as a martial arts instructor, and he's a computer geek, and has dabbled in making 'techno' music, (before that, spinning as a DJ... before that, drumming) for quite a while. He was really jazzed when he got this opportunity to intern at this recording studio, and learn that end of the music business.

So, he was saying that he really needed some bands or artists to come in and record, and let him do the engineering, to get some engineering time under his belt. Being the good mom that I am, and having brought some instruments down to Texas, I said, "Well, I'll buy some studio time".

So, yesterday, we went to the studio. It was my first experience in a PROFESSIONAL recording studio, and it was AWESOME! Austin is a super cool, laid back town, anyway... the music capital of Texas.... and Mark Hallman, the guy that owns and runs this studio is really cool.

So, Tommy got me all set up, and we started recording. We multi-tracked, and for the first session, I chose a medley of Hardiman the Fiddler and Another Jig will do. I played melody on my Weber Bridger A, then melody on my Petersen OM, then chords on my Petersen OM. Once we were satisfied with that one, he said we had about 30 more minutes, so I wanted to see if I could get another in the can. I played Wren's Hornpipe, first melody on my Tenor Banjo, then melody on my OM, then chords on my OM, then melody on my mandolin!

Actually came away, after 3 hours of studio time, with 2 pretty decent recordings! It was a blast!

So, if there are any of ya'll in the Austin area (or going to be in the Austin area), who want some studio time recording, contact the Congress House, and ask for Tommy. Right now, he's willing to donate the engineering fee, so all you'd have to pay is straight studio time... what a BARGAIN for a first class professional recording studio!

I do have these 2 cuts, on my flash drive, so when I get back home to my own computer, I'll figure out how to post them here on the cafe.... my first 'solo' effort!

I know several musicians who may be interested. I'll drop them a line. Sounds like a great experience. Austin in FULL of small (and not so small) recording studios. Some of them are near legendary.

Greetings Barbara,

Welcome to Austin! The Congress House studio is great place to record. I've played mandolin on a number of projects there through the years -- recordings for singer-songwriter Christine Albert and Fairport Convention founder Iain Mathews come to mind.

Congress House owner Mark Hallman is a talented musician in his own right and routinely provides a comfortable, fun, relaxed and professional atmosphere. Your son has landed in a great place.

All the best,

What a great Mom! Wish I lived closer.

Actually, that's the best compliment I could ever get..... Since being a Mom is the most important job a Mom has!

Wish he needed a second intern. My son is attending UT-Austin majoring in sound production.
