I came accross Early Mandolin Classics - Vol 1 of all places at a Boarders book store. I had not seen it before, it is great. Being a long time R. Crumb fan I noticed it was produced by Terry Zwigoff, Cheapsuit band member and film maker. Does any one Know if there is a Vol 2?

I have been listening to this recording for a few years now. I agree, it is great

Vol 2? That is the question...Vol 1 is a great recording no question.

After waiting for years for volume 2, I picked up "Rags, Breakdowns, Stomps & Blues," Vintage Mandolin Music (1927-1946.) It duplicates Volume 1 on a few cuts but has 24 great mandolin classics. Definitely worth looking for.

It's on Document (DOCD-32-20-3.) They're a German label so you might have to order it from Venerable or a similar specialty CD source. I also found some great Italian mandolin 78 reissues Venerable too. (NFI)

You can find the Document disk here (http://www.document-records.com/fulldetails.asp?ProdID=DOCD-32-20-03).

complete with three free downloads, including most of Lint Head Stomp by Phebel Wright, which is advertised as proto-Bluegrass and sure has a lot in common with early Monroe songs like BG Stomp, complete with Monroe's signature tremolos of that period.

I had not heard of Wright, I found This description (http://www.answers.com/topic/phebel-wright) from answers.com. He was from Elkhorn City KY but it seems he post-dated the Monroe Brothers, so probably the influence, if any was from Monroe to him. Still a nice cut.

Thanks for the heads up on the Document site and Vintage Mandolin recording.
Phebel Wright sounds interesting, I'll have to ask my friend Marshall Wyat ( owner of Old Hat Records ) if he has some more info and-or recordings of him.

Since there's no "vol 2" of "Early Mandolin Classics" , I've been trying to get a copy of "Rags, Breakdowns, Stomps & Blues," Vintage Mandolin Music(1927-1946) for the last couple of years, but keep running into 'out of print' problems( one vendor showed 2 copies available, & sent me some synthesizer noodling garbage instead).
Another thanks, swampstomper, "for the heads up on the Document site".

You can get this one on eMusic, too.

Miss out on any liner notes that way, of course, but no worries about shipping from UK.

I used those CD's as a starting point. Many of the mando players on that CD recorded a bunch of stuff.

I keep a discography of old and new OTMM (Old Time Mandolin Music) that's been issued on CD at http://www.oldtimemandolinmusic.com. If you run across anything new (or old), please send me an email and I'll add a link on the website.
