Happy Birthday from Santa Cruz. I have liked your music making over the years; bought a number of Acoustic Disc cds; and really enjoyed the Mandolin Symposium for the last 3 summers I have participated in it! My first summer, I remember going to your workshop on tremolo, and getting some tips, and also being in the presence of a down to earth teacher....and great musician.

Several of these threads floating around in the Archives. This is good as any to again add my 2012 best birthday wish to the Dawg. Was just listening to some cuts of his Quintet '80 yesterday and thinking those early albums of his were like the sun coming up for the first time for a lot of people. Wow, some with a mandolin is doing stuff in a band that's way outside of what we've heard before. He's a living legend that's done it all in much the fashion Monroe did only with different music. Writer, musician, band leader, business man, record label owner... and much more. And he's a great human being to match.
Happy birthday, Dawg.
Shouldn't this be a national holiday for string band musicians?

Seriously, how many people on this site are here because of David Grisman (as well as Mr. Monroe & Mr. Thile)? He's the reason I happily picked up the instrument. Beyond everything that's already been mentioned, he remains the supreme advocate for our humble instrument. Thanks for making my world all the richer.

Happy Birthday, David Grisman! I'm a cat person, not much for dogs, but I do make an exception for this Dawg. ;) Thank you for your immense contribution to music and in particular the mandolin. You have explored more of its capabilities and pushed the envelope for it more than anyone else I know.
It was immensely thrilling to have spent several minutes in the presence of this genius one year in the performers' area at Winterhawk. Wish I'd had a mandolin in my hands rather than a notebook. I'll never forget being able to see the mischievous twinkle in his eyes as he picked a little with whomever was nearby and not overly intimidated. There's something so cool about being so close to so much greatness. :mandosmiley:
