Today was the first weekly Jam at Ingram & Braun's Music Shoppe (http://www.ibmusik.com/) in Modesto. Hosted by luthier Gary Vessel, it was lightly attended but the potential is high for a regular musical event.
Gary and I were joined by local fiddler Fred Step and a bass player named Daniel Fabricant. These two guys, separately, created a couple of notable events.
First, Daniel F is the bass player for Jil Aigrot (http://www.jilaigrot.com/), who is touring the US for the next 3 weeks. She and the rest of her band and are playing at the local Gallo Center for the Performing Arts tonight (http://www.galloarts.org/Events/EventDetails.aspx?id=795). Daniel is an excellent bass player, a good guitar player, and even tickled my mandolin a little. He was looking for a little musical diversion and some conversation in English. Apparently, the rest of Jil's band is French. They speak French and German, Daniel speaks English and Spanish. :) I hope we helped him out some.
Second, Fred Step's appearance brought the number of Vessel mandolins in the room up to three. So it was a reunion of Gary's work. We took a couple of cell phone pictures, but none of us was prepared with an actual camera.
Modesto is unusual for a number of reasons, one of them is the sheer number of mandolin players in the area. Gary is natuarally a mandolin player, I player mando and guitar, and Fred plays fiddle and mandolin. So when Daniel F wanted to play a little guitar, I loaned him mine. And there the 4 of us were: one guitar and three mandolins, all Vessels. In the middle of "Back up and Push" I realized this and laughed out loud. In fact, Daniel F was taking a break at the time! Quite the scene, and only in Modesto!
Of you're in Modesto on a Saturday afternoon stop by Ingram & Brauns! Lord knows I could use more practice on the guitar!
