This has been widely discussed in a number of threads. Here's just one (http://www.mandolincafe.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST&f=12&t=15907). Bottom line in my opinion is that mandolin players cause 99.9% of the problems in carry-on if there is a problem.

Carle,
Be careful with that mando in Vegas. I just got back last night. The temps were 107 degrees with very low humidity.
DRY HEAT to say the least. As far as your case, it should not be a problem. I fly for a Major airline, and see them quite a bit.

I flew from Salt Lake City to St. Louis and back with my Calton case and no one ever even asked what was in it! Of course it went through the x-ray machine, but they were strip-searching old ladies and letting me go without a sideways glance. You just never know.

Darrell,

Who do you fly for?

I strap my mando & case in the A320 jumpseat. #It has not missed a trip in the last 10 months.

It passes the time in (insert the city of choice [OAK/SAN/LGB/LAS/MCO etc] for your favorite 24 hr lay-over) the hotel. #Did I mention that it is cheaper than beer? #At least as a daily expense.

I have heard every single dumb joke about in-flight entertainment there is...

If asked at security, I make the TSA guys guess what is in the case. #If you tell them right away you open yourself up to a barrage of "witty" & original jokes. #If you make them guess publicly.... you get the picture.

Hello Bucket, that sounds great. I work for USAirways. 757/767.

I don`t take my mando on any trips. Don`t want to expose it to #different temps, and the 0 percent humidity of the cabin on a continuous basis. I do take some instructional material that I watch on my portable dvd player from time to time.

I just want to warn about flying America West--they put all instruments into checked storage. Then even went so far as to take my mandolin out of the overhead (which was not full and the plane was already as loaded as it was going to get) and stashed it under. It seems that a misreading of FAA regs has become corporate policy. And the flight attendant was not nice about it either. Of course, I would never plame a mando playing pilot for these things!

So we will be on tour in Colorado in October for a week. Aspen, Denver, Ft.Collins etc. Is that too long to go without a humidifier? How about a half an apple?
