What kind of mandolin did Staats play on the Pickin Up Steam album?
Not sure on that album but I believe he plays a Red Diamond.

Great! Couldn't it have been something cheaper!

If I am not mistaken, I believe he owns two Red Diamond mandolins. If you have a chance to play one of Don's mandolins, especially his recent Reischman vintage series, you'll understand his need to own two RD's!

Staats is playing a Buckeye on the cover of the "Pickin' Up Steam" cd I have.
Pretty sure he played the Buckeye on "Wires & Wood".
pjkle4,I think you can get a Buckeye for less cash than a Red Diamond Vintage(Reischman/Crusher/etc.) Probably a lot less.
Like the Dali Lama says,"I could be wrong about all this."

I just checked the Red Diamond web-site and Johnny does in fact own two RD's. That ought to tell you something. Staats is a whale of a good picker.

Hard for me to believe my RD #61 is 16 years old now. I had a much later Birdseye RD that I let get away...
Red Diamonds are extra-fine instruments. Staats is crazy-good.

I picked with Staats this year at Winfield and he does in fact have a new vintage Red Damond F-5. It is a great mandolin. I would wager that No One can play faster and cleaner than him. He is a super nice fella.

It rarely is. :(
