wow! What a show! They played for over an hour and a half...only expected an hour or so. Before the show, they (NBB) had a panel discussion and a Q & A which was fun and it was nice to see the band members just being themselves.
Now I know what y'all mean when you talk about the economy of motion of Mike Comptons' right hand. My seat was fairly close to the stage and I was able to watch Mikes' right hand carefully...I hope I didn't creep him out...I learned a lot by just that. :disbelief:
If I seem overly enthusiastic please forgive me but it's not often that we get to see the 'big timers' out here in SoCal. Also, got to talk a little with the band at the meet and greet...nice guys. :))

Hey...how about Compton's left hand? Talk about economy of motion.......he hardly lifts his fingers, in fact I can't really see what he is doing, his technique is so stealth. Not that I'd be trying to cop his licks or anything. :disbelief: :)

They are one of my favorite bands and I have been lucky enough to see them about 4 times. Wish they'd come to Arkansas more often. Got to see Mike paly with his oval hole Gil and his F5 model Gil. It doesn't matter what he's playing with ... he's just plain good! The whole band is just awesome. You would find it very hard to find a banjo and fiddle player as good as Alan & Stewart.
And the NBB harmony...unreal! They are to me very different compared to your normal bluegrass band. They can get pretty bluesy. Can't wait to see them again somewhere along the trail.

Now that you mention it, they were pretty bluescentric and it was great! I love the blues aspect of bluegrass music.

Evenin'...
Mark...I've known Mike since he was a skinny butted youngun...
It was very obvious he was gonna be a player, even back then .
He used my mandolin for several years...and can use it again if he
chooses to .
He comes from Meridian,or just down the road south bout five miles . Picked with us round here...had long hair...can you imagine ?
He has become the finest in the kinda playing I relate to..I love him and am very
proud of him.......don't tell him though...his shiny head don't need to be a bit bigger.....

Yeah!
I second what Ray sez!
And Mike wrote a lil tune for Ray: "Huffy", which appeared on the 'Climbing the Walls' CD.

Guess I don't have to tell ya ... he's one of my hero mandolin pickers. Here's a pic I took at one show and then at another show Mike was kind enough to autograph it for me. :mandosmiley:
Boy can pick for sure.

I was fortunate to see Mike with David Long a few years back on their Stomp tour. What a tour de force!

Got to hang out with Mike yesterday at a workshop Jim Richter organized here in Bloomington. Mike always does a great workshop.
Here's a few cell phone pics. Have a cell video, and some recordings but havent looked to see how they turned out yet.
