(Oh and I am using a Bluechip pick on all 3) =)

It's an interesting mix of electric and acoustic. The performance is great, and I think it works, but I'm not so big on the use of the vocoder --though perhaps it gives that Young nasality.
Neil did a whole album with vocoders - Trans - you either love it or hate it =) I think the vocoder captures the essence of the french horn in the original, and the Trans thing, and the sci-fi theme of the song - plus you don't have to worry about singing in pitch as the guitar tracks the melody. Heheh

Nice take on it...you should add some harmonies ;-)
Couple questions on recording...what mic is that you're using? Is there a pickup on the mando (what kind?) and if so, did you blend the mic and pickup? You got a very nice, natural sound form your setup which makes the vocoder sound work well!
Oh, forgot to ask...I assume this is a computer recording setup...what DAW/audio interface do you use?
I guess I should probably just ask what the whole recording setup is ;)

I am micing in stereo using an AKG 414 and a Shure SM 81 through an Apogee Mini-DAC Preamp into Sony VEGAS as my editing program. You can see their positioning in the video. There are no added effects on anything except the vocal which I added a dab of reverb to since it was recorded direct with the vocoder effect. The only instrument "Plugged in" is the electric, and then that is only plugged into the vocoder to serve as a melody guide. Vocal mic goes into the vocoder to the preamp.
I really only ever worry about getting a good clean signal.
Hope this helps.

Nice rig! So both a small and large diaphragm condenser...was that design on purpose of just because those are what you had? The acoustic sound reproduction is very nice. Would you attribute that more to the AKG or the Shure?
I'm asking because I'm looking for a better acoustic mic than the Rode I have.
I'm using an MBOX2 and the DAW software I use varies. I like Pro Tools but I get a lot more done with Reaper or Tracktion so I usually do the initial editing in Tracktion and final editing in Pro Tools.

Yes it's on purpose - I record with both mics then pan extreme left and right for a natural stereo spread. Both mics are very articulate - the SM81 sounding a little more clear and flat in the high end and the 414 to my hears sounding a little more 3 dimensional and warm - makes a nice stereo spread. Either one works great by itself on acoustic instruments in mono. The mics were actually further back than I usually use them so as not to block the camera - vain, I know!

rnr,I realy enjoyed your rendition! Technology rules.
I couldn't quite pick out what the single-string electric sounded like;still liked it.
Sold my D3 Braz. last year. I ain't no guitar picker anyways. Went to a good home. Love Collings guitars. I'd like to play a Collings mandolin.
It ain't really vanity if you pull it off that well!
Got high just listening.

Thanks! The electric guitar is there as a controller for the vocoder. It played the melody that my voice was snythesized with. It was plugged directly into the Voice Box, and not into an amp or anything.
Very cool...one of the few youtube videos I actually watched all the way through...you must of had a blast making it.
