Was going to post this article on the Cafe home page but decided not to. Still, pretty funny and worth reading. Problem with the article for mandolin players is that the punch line doesn't come until the end. I emailed Mike Marshall this. He'll get a kick out of it. Hope you do too.

Sorry, Eagles, cash is already gone (http://www.mansfieldnewsjournal.com/news/stories/20040730/localnews/944685.html)

I Love it-what a quote. Mike should have that put in his promo material

Please, Eagles fans, take no offense at my comment on this, but it brings to mind one of my favorite sayings on popularity and cultural taste:
"Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups."

Joe Walsh has been one of my favorite guitar heros since his days with the James Gang and Barnstrom, but over $100 per ticket? No thank you very much. #

And how about Mike Marshall tickets at $20 a pop? That's a great value for the caliber of musicianship to be witnessed at one of his shows, and I would happily spend far more than that.

What's most pathetic is that most of these old rock 'n roll dinosaurs haven't written new material in over twenty years, so there's absolutely no reason to tour except all that easy money. Look at someone like Ryan Adams( not to be confused with Bryan Adams!); he puts out albums every year nearly and tours to make enough money to buy cigarettes and tuna fish sandwiches. I might consider buying a ticket see someone like The Who if Pete Townshend would actually get off his complacent old arse and write some new songs, and if they brought down the ticket prices to a reasonable level.

I feel so fortunate to have seen all those amazing groups back when they were vital and affordable--a good combo.

I remember seeing the Eagles open for Procol Harum, and they were just on fire. #Very very pre-Joe Walsh, they opened the set with an acapulco "Come all Fair and Tender Ladies"--pretty cool.

Tickets in the late 60's were $3.50 for years and years, and that got you 3 good bands at the Fillmore or Winterland. #Plus, you could get in underage, so it was a real eye opener to see Lenny Bruce and the Airplane for this here teenager... #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

I remember not paying the 5.50 to get in to the Monterrey Fairgrounds to see Hendrix and the Who because I was gonna see Hendrix the next week--what a huge mistake that was...
Got to see most of the other acts, though...

In '72, the Stones got 7.50 for tickets for their Winterland shows, which was a major jump in prices, and it's escalated ever since...

If it's any consolation, Europe seems to have been paying these inflated prices for quite some time now...

Makes you appreciate a good BG festival, doesn't it?

The only time I saw the Eagles, my ticket was well under ten bucks (of course, Bernie was still with them and they only had one LP released). This summer I saw both Mark O'Connor and Edgar Meyer for $24 a pop and my seats were great. Bela Fleck was also here (although I didn't catch him, its been warm, he played at the Zoo, great venue depending on the temperature).

I must admit I paid $100 bucks to see the eagles in Knoxville. Worth every penny of it. Opening song.. lights go down... spotlight comes on the group around 1 mic and they sing "Seven Bridges Road" nail it dead on.. still gives me chills to this day..

Along those same lines, one of my favorite sayings, from a Black Sabbath tour: "If you listen to fools, the mob rules."

This whole discussion reminds me of something I've been thinking for a while.
Around here, as well as other places I'm sure, it's not uncommon to be at a party or pickin' session where you can hear some of the very best bluegrass and other acoustic musicians playing for fun. It doesn't cost anything except travel and maybe a covered dish.
As has been stated, you can pay a lot to hear music, so it astounds me when it's nearly free and people wont even shut up and listen!!

The article is about a concert at Kent State University, which is emerging as a Folk cultural center. Just stumbled across their www.FolkAlley.com site recently, which is folk 24/7. As I read this thread I was listening to it: Chris Thile and Bela Fleck.

KSU also has an annual Folk Festival in November as well as some impressive follk acts year round. All this only 2 hours from home. Life is getting better every day.

Now for the odd coincidence: Joe Walsh attended KSU as a student for a quarter or two in the pre-James Gang days. Guess he didn't need that bachelor's degree after all.

Joe Walsh ain't no Mike M. but Mike M ain't no Joe Walsh either! The Eagles without Joe is like a day without sunshine...but what do I know anyways. Funk 49 is still one of my favorite rock-n-roll tunes of all time. I've seen Joe 40 to 50 times from late 60's to the last time in 2001 or so and he's still got some mojo going on. Now where was that thread about Zamfir at....?http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Sunburst - Can't claim an extensive, scientific study but it seems that crowd rudeness is worst at free concerts. In the late 70s I was sixth row center for a free John Hartford show and had trouble hearing over the conversations.
