I was recently given some mandolin building materials. I have been sorting through all the stuff and there are some fretboards. I don't know what the scale is. How would I go about identifying them?

Measure from the "O" location, ie, the end of the FB, to the 12th fret slot....and then multiply that number by two...that will give you the scale length which is the theoretical distance from the nut to the bridge. The practical distance is always longer than this due to the need for "compensation" of the string being pulled sharp as it is pressed to the fret.
International Luthier Supply has a handy fret calculator on their web site under Tech tips.
