I'm starting to conceive a recording project of using traditional fiddle tunes as the starting point for some edgy exploration. The process I envision will include choosing some parts of mostly well-known traditional tunes, tunes like Liberty, Morpeth Rant, Swinging on a Gate, maybe even one Bach sonata, and then looping, modulating, and layering these pieces; basically to create shape-shifting pads for other instruments and a vocalist to play over.
I have heard one example of this, a French-speaking group from Montreal (their name escapes me at the moment) that has used a slight bit of this techno process with Cape Breton reels and jigs as the origin.
I'm hoping that some, here, can point me to other recordings that have employed sampling techniques with traditional music. Examples are much appreciated.
