Heard an interesting conversation today, somebody's talking about their "Music Mt Rushmore"
Got me to thinkin' bout mine:
Hank Williams
Steve Earle
Paul McCartney
Gram Parsons
Its interesting to me that all of mine are songwriters primarily, rather than soloist/instrumentalist. I guess I have to come up with that one too.
Hendrix
Blake
Jerry Douglass
Ronnie McCoury (People will kill me for that, but he's the main reason I even picked up the mando in the first place):)
So who's on yours ?
mandroid
Feb-21-2009, 8:14pm
Louis Armstrong .. have to think a while to come up with the other 3.

Mt Rushmore was supposed to honour the presidents who had changed the way the presidency was perceived, and who played major roles in their historical periods. It was also meant to spread out over historical periods. Wikipedia says "These presidents were selected by Borglum because of their role in preserving the Republic and expanding its territory".
So, who has preserved the mandolin or its music and expanded its territory, in different historical periods?
1. Orville Gibson --> directly responsible for the modern mandolin, the mandolin orchestras, trickling down to popular, jazz and country musicians
2. Bill Monroe --> made the mandolin front-and-center in rural music and then invented a style that took the mandolin in its modern form around the world
3. Kennth C. "Jethro" Burns --> he stands in for Tiny Moore, but is arguably more influential in making the jazz mandolin a serious instrument
4. David Grisman --> a tireless ambassador for new acoustic music (as well as bluegrass), spreading the mando as widely as he can in so many ways. In this historical period we could think of plenty of great and influential pickers (Bush, Thile, even Duffy) but Grisman has to stand in for them.
There... rationally thought out and "objective" -- NOT!

I also agree with Stephen about Shawn Lane. Not only is Blue Highway the best band in bluegrass, IMO, but Shawn is such an accomplished songwriter, singer, multi-talented instrumentalist. Great talent.

what do you guys think the most influential luthier's rushmore would be? Maybe too personal for the message board, as some of those influential luthiers are active on the board. But hey! its both living and dead right?

For all music, mine is actually pretty easy:
Bach
Beethoven
Brahms
Stravinsky
Nobody else even comes close.
For a contemporary acoustic version, I think this would be my preference:
Bela Fleck
Edgar Meyer
Chris Thile
Mark O'Connor
The first three are easy, I would consider putting Tony Rice instead of O'Connor (depending on who I had listened to most recently :) ).

Let's see ... who's on Mandolin Mick's Mount Rushmore? ;)
This is really hard because I've been into different music at different periods of my life. But the 2 that lasted the longest and actually have 4 guys:
Bluegrass Mount Rushmore
Bill Monroe
Earl Scruggs
Jesse McReynolds
Carl Story
Rock Bassists Mount Rushmore (Flat Wounds :)))
Paul McCartney
Bill Wyman
John Paul Jones
John Lodge
Skip Kelley

I have an old print around here some place that I bought at the old Ryman that has Monroe included in the Mt rushmore memorial. It is too cool!

What a fun thread!
Since our criterion is a musical version of 'Mount Rushmore', I'm listing only Americans. (This was hard for me to do, particularly since it meant the exclusion of both Neil Young and David Gilmour!):
My American Music Mount Rushmore:
Aaron Copland
Stephen Foster
Muddy Waters
Johnny Cash
My American Mandocentric Mount Rushmore:
Bill Monroe
Yank Rachell
David Grisman
Mike Marshall
Bertram Henze
Oct-06-2010, 8:22am
Actually, my Mount Rushmore is empty. And more beautiful for it, too.
Pete Summers
Oct-06-2010, 8:47am
My musical Rushmore:
Scott Joplin
Louis Armstrong
George Gershwin
Bill Monroe
In place of the current faces on Rushmore:
Crazy Horse
Sitting Bull
Gaul
Red Cloud
:)

Oct-06-2010, 9:49am
Pete, I'll put a vote in for Tecumseh. (Like me he's from 'former Shawnee territory')
Pete Summers
Oct-06-2010, 10:25am
Thanks Ed. I agree. Tecumseh should be up there too. As long as we are defacing the Black Hills, might as well add another face or two. :)
I also think my other musical choices all owe a huge debt to Scott Joplin, as do all modern musicians. I think he's America's most forgotten musical genius and his rags led directly to jazz, rock and bluegrass. He should have his face on Rushmore twice.

This is my first post anywhere on MandoCafe. I have about 7 years of indifferent acoustic guitar banging under my belt and was recently given a Fullerton Hammonton by a fly fishing buddy. So, I'm just getting started. So far, my biggest learning problem has been to concentrate on chord shapes. The 1st position on the fretboard on this thing is so easy to get around on that I can't stop playing medleys of whatever melodies come to mind. Earlier this afternoon, I played a medley of the Marine's Hymn/Deutschland Uber Alles/As Time Goes By/Hickory Wind/the old McDonald's jingle.
I need to bear down...:)
