I remember reading a review by Steve Khan where he stated that " ...." had found that fine line of playing art and still capturing the imagination of the commercial music listener. What is that fine line I wonder?

I reckon that fine line is as hard to define as "what is the best pick" or "what is the best mandolin."

I guess "capturing the imagination of the commercial music listener" is fairly easy to measure by sales numbers. But "playing art?" Man. . . you tryin' to start somethin??

I would say that very nebulous line varies upon genre and moment. I won't attempt to define it other than all the right parts coming together at the right time for the right people to consume/be moved by it.
