Tell me what you think of the custom Weber Bigsky i am getting. It will have a shaved neck a simple but cool vine on the neck have a quilted maple one piece back. Not muchh but should look pretty cool.

Should be awesome. I played a BS at The Mandolin Store a month or so ago that was a monster. Cedar top? X-braced? :mandosmiley:

I think you should be disappointed with it and mail it to me.... ;)
Sounds like a beauty. You'll have to post some pictures when you get it.

You'll be very happy...how can you not be? I recently played some various Webers and a Big Sky stood out as the best of that bunch. It's always special when you can put a little personal touch on something.

You're going to be one happy picker, I can almost gaurantee it. The best thing about Sound to Earth is they will do customizations, and I argue that they do them better than anyone in the industry.
My recommendation... lower the action a bit when you first get it. Play the GHS strings for a few days, then put some EXP74s on it. That's just my preference.

I have a nice mandolin. Real nice.
The one you're describing makes me jealous.

I haven't played a Weber for a decade or so. I'd be very interested to play a Weber "whatever the closest to a '29 Gibson Fern is".
Ditto Kimble "whatever is closest to a '29 Gibson Fern is".
Ditto Brentrup "whatever is closest..."
Gibson,Monteleone,Daley,Red Diamond,Gilchrist,Dudenbostel...etc. ad nauseum.

Don't know what shape the shaved neck will be;but,I tend to like slimmer ,narrower necks(Loarish). Shave on.
I'm not crazy about vine fingerboard inlays. Standard dots or blocks,OK. OR no fingerboard inlays at ALL. Even better.
The quilted maple may, indeed, look pretty cool. Nobody sees the back of your mandolin while you're playing. What matters is what it sounds like.
One piece backs are as much a fashion statement as scooped fingerboards.

Not much? I think any instrument that comes from the Weber folks will be fantastic!

It's true that the tone is the first priority. That's the only thing that really made sense in your posts Cameron, no offense.
I think I also picked up on the age old "Monteleone, Nugget, Gilchrist, Dudenbostel, DMM, etc. is better routine." I'm sorry, But I've played a few of those awesome mandolins, and they don't have the definitive edge overzealous enthusiasts claim. You don't need to pay $25,000 to get an awesome mandolin. You don't need to pay over $7,000 either. Those are fantastic mandolins, but their price tag does not make them somehow better. Their price tag is a result of marketing.
In fact, when I looked for a mandolin, I wanted something that decidedly did not sound like a 1929 Gibson, and also one that didn't sound like one signed by Loyd Loar. That's what everybody sounds like. Who wants to do that?
A Weber Big Sky is a fine mandolin. If you have one with that extra zing, it is unsurpassed.
