There's something about a good mandolin and guitar song, do you recommend any favorite CD's of such?
Thanks.

Oh yeah! Two great ones:
"Little River Stomp" by the Buckhannon Brothers. It is all mando and guitar instrumentals, except one track has background piano on it. Curtis B. is one of the great old-time mando players alive today. The CD is only available from the the B. Brothers web site:

BTW, the B. Brothers are the opening act for Mike Compton and David Greer in St. Louis this weekend. I can't wait!
Also, I highly recommend Clyde Curley and the Oxymorons' "OLD-TIME MANDOLIN MUSIC" CD. It is 80% mando and guitar, with just a little bass, harmonica and banjo thrown in here and there. It can be purchased here:

I consider both of these "must haves" for OT mando enthusiasts.

I'm sure you've already heard it, but if you haven't:
Tone Poems - Grisman/Rice
Just duet mandolin/guitar with really interesting instruments too.

Mike Compton/David Grier - "Climbing the Walls."
John Reischman's albums with John Miller are quite good as well. It's amazing how much space they can fill with just two instruments. John Miller's got a great fingerstyle guitar approach which adds some nice bass to the mix.

There's an old Tony Rice & Ricky Skaggs duet CD that I love. I think the name of it is "Skaggs & Rice". Mostly pretty straight-forward stuff and I think there's only one instrumental. Even if you're not a fan of Skaggs' late stuff you might like this one, seems a bit more heartfelt.

Just picked it up a couple days ago:
Tony Rice, The Bluegrass Guitar Collection. Sam Bush, Doyle Lawson, Jimmy Gaudreau, Norman Blake play mandolin on various tracks. A must have in my opinion http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Why not go straight to the source? Smithsonian Folkways has a great, great CD called Bill Monroe & Doc Watson...all duets, classic. Definitely one of the most listened to albums I've ever bought.

For the completists among you, on bluegrassbox.com there are a couple of Doc Watson downloads with Ricky Skaggs doing the Bill Monroe part of songs from the Smithsonian Folkways album, plus one or two other Watson/Monroe shows from that time period. And I could write a short essay on how cool "Feast Here Tonight/Rabbit in a Log" is. Who is the narrator? Why doesn't he have a home? Is he roaming the south during the Reconstruction? Drink in your summer.

The Waybacks!
Various tunes combine a mandolin or two with varying combinations of...
guitar
slide guitar
fingerstyle guitar
and also...
fiddle
acoustic bass
drums
...and you can see them for free at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in SF in Oct, where Darol Anger will sit in on fiddle...
and they've been sat in with by Bob Weir a bit, lately, here and there.
Be prepared to be awestruck.

Johnny Staats and Robert Shaffer get my vote. It's called "Pickin' Up Steam". Don't miss it!

Doesn't Sam Bush accompany Dan Crary on his "Guitar" album? Gotta be good.

..Manzanita...fer sure
Well I've got the Bill Monroe/Doc Watson Smithsonian cd and "Doc and Dawg." But, surprisingly, nobody has mentioned my two favorites in this category - "The Pizza Tapes," Dawg, Jerry Garcia and Tony Rice. And especially "The Kitchen Tapes" With Frank Wakefield and Red Allen. If you want just guitar and mando uncluttered with other instrumentation these are as good as it gets.

I'll second the Tony Rice BG Guitar Collection, also Bryon Sutton's Bluegrass Guitar is very good.
The Bible -- "Bluegrass Mandolin Extravaganza". One guitar, played mainly by Del McCoury, lots of single mando, duo mandos, groups... Doesn't get any better than this.

There was also a CD that I think Scott featured on teh main cafe page one time by two guys, one of whom is Marc Roy. They may have been Canadian, and their music was awesome. i will try to look up the Cd. i've meant to buy it, but ah, so many cd's so little cash!

Scaggs and Rice is good, but I like the Monroe Brothers more. I also just got Bye Bye blues by Jethro Burns with Don Stiernberg on geetar, it's a winner!
