http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif So I'm just new in here but not everywhere else and have been playing the mandolin on and off since late 1997.
I've got a Crafter with active pick-ups electro acoustic which has a nice/sweet sound.
And how about you?Which kinda mandolin have you got?
Oh by the way I've had that mandolin since 2004,that's it and it's all down to you guys.....right now![B]

I have a Gibson F-9 that I use for bluegrass and jamming. It's got a ToneGard on it, perfect bluegrass chop sound that I look for for that kind of music. I also have a Michael Kelly Firefly, which has the nice soft, warm sound with a lot of low end that is perfect for soft acoustic jazz and classical, which I play most often, and I have it strung up with Thomastiks. I also have a cheap Epiphone MM-30, but one of my friends is borrowing that.

I have a Phoenix Neoclassical (my main mando--much more versatile than any other I have played), a Gibson A 50, a National (upon which I play slide--when so moved), a Bruno mandolin-banjo and a no-name Gibsonish Mandocello.
The best story about any of these relates to the mandocello (forgive me if you've read this before). My brother bought it for me at a place in coastal NJ called (if memory serves...)George's Bait and Tackle and Music($35!!!).

I own a cheap (but "purrdy" amber and chestnut coloured) f-hole Hyburn. I believe Hyburns are made in Germany. There is no date inside as to when it was crafted. Just a cereal number. It has a nice "voice" and is not too difficult to fret for $150.00 Can. This is my first mandolin, as I am still only a beginner. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

Lee: If you are married, what advice can you impart on those of us with spouses who don't understand, nor enable, MAS?
Holy smokies Lee, what a stable! Well, you got one horse for cuttin' sheep, one for show, one to pull the wagon, one to take the lady out, the rest, well, you like horses, I s'pose.
As for me, I thinned my herd recently, Gibson A-Jr, my favorite and I'll keep it till I die, maybe, and a Japanese F made by Morris(not Howard), sweet player, could use a little more sound, though.
Now, guitars, well.........

A couple of years ago, I vowed that my then recently-acquired Gibson F-9 would be my last mandolin. #Alas, the seductions of Mandolin Cafe were too much to keep my MAS under control. #Now I've got a 2003 Wayne Benson Artist Model and a 2004 Varnish Fern. #Sound-wise, they couldn't be more different. #The Fern, which I ordered with a dark brown finish, has a throaty chop and rich, mellow bluegrass tone. #It also has a rounded neck profile which is very comfortable to hold. #The Benson, by contrast, has a V-neck and a dry, very focused sound. #I'm still trying to decide which one I like best. #On looks, though, the Benson wins hands down. #Its satin finish, wine red sunburst, and blue abalone fern inlay just knock me out. #It'll (probably) be my last mandolin. # #

Currently, I play a Duff F5 (and have gone through a series of Gibsons in the recent past: a Sam Bush F5, a 1914 F2, a '27 F4, an '18 A3), but next week it looks I'll be replacing my Duff with a Wayne Henderson F5. Wish I could amass a stable of mandolins, but have too many other hobbies (guitar, banjo, Macintosh computers) which take my available cash.

New to this forum - I have a handmade F5 started by my brother some 25 years ago, left uncompleted until 2 years ago. I got all the pieces and parts and had Scott Morgan (of Bluegrass Alliance) complete the building and finishing. An incredible, loud bluegrass beauty, great tone and amazing history. Now to learn to play it...

2 mandolins have come and gone, and the three survivors are:
Flatiron Festival F - hardly play it, because the BG band I got it for and played it with has since parted
1914 Gibson A - probably my favorite mandolin ever. The sound is so warm, rich, and round and 90 years of mojo don't hurt either. I wish I knew what this mando has been through. It was refretted with larger fretwire some time in its past, and I appreciate the alteration greatly.
Weber Aspen #2 - My only e-bay instrument purchase....got it at a crazy low price expecting it to be purely a camping mando, but it surprised the heck out of me with the quality of the sound. A beautiful mando to look at, and has a very lovely, and surprisingly loud, flattop tone.

Okay, since it seems I have way too much time on my hands this fine Sunday, I counted 177 mandolins so far. Here's how they break down (with the brand, quantity, and overall percentage of responders):
Big volume builders
Gibson 24/ 13.6%
Kentucky 13/ 7.3%
Weber 6 / 3.4%
Rigel 5 / 2.8%
Flatiron 5
Johnson 5
Michael Kelly 4/ 2.3%
Epiphone 4
Fender 4
Collings 4
Other "big volume builders" 19/10.7%
Total "big volume builders"= 93/52.5%
Small volume builders
Schwab 4/ 2.3%
Phoenix 4
BRW 3/ 1.7%
Givens 2/ 1.1%
Stiver 2
Laura Ratcliffe 2
Dean 2
Old Wave 2
No name/self built 6/ 3.4%
Other "small volume builders" 57/ 32%
Total "small volume builders" 84/ 47.5%
Well, it seemed interesting to me. I hope someone else finds it so. I could be wrong in my placement of a few "small volume builders", but I think it's pretty close. I should be practicing more and number crunching less. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif
Interesting breakdown. Thanks for taking the time.
I'm surprised to see you place Phoenix in the "big builder" bracket. I'm pretty sure Rolfe works solo.

Not so long ago there was here in the café a listing of instruments we have gotten... Clearly, most of these listings are focused to american brands and makers, but so is this site and much of the mando friendly places in internet.... just to say that there are many good mando makers outside big brands from the US, and Pac rim countries that don´t show up in internet like those based on the Gibson models.
Anyhow, it was amazing to know about how many of us are MAS addicted in this forum.... I am one of those who started with an andean charango and then spread with the whole mandolin family with all kind of other plectrum relatives I use with my ceilid band. Currently, I have 5 mandos plus a plethora of other folk relatives from different places around the world. #
from my current list I just copied and pasted.

I'm glad to see those inspired by an older tradition stepping up. I doubt anybody could possibly care, but here are a couple details from my current stable.
Bowlbacks:
Luciano Faria, 2004, 6-course mandolino (after Smorsone 1736)
Anon. ca. 1835
C.F. Martin & Co., 1908, "Unidentified special, maple joints"
The Vega Co., ca. 1910s "Made expressly for Peter Schuchmann" (who the h*** was Schuchmann!?)
The Vega Co., ca. 1910s (with a wee Vinaccia-like butterfly like no other Vega I've seen)
Washburn, ca. 1910s, Style 225 (no relation to the modern Washburn in spite of the assumed airs)
Non-bowlback newfangled upstart whippersnapper:
The Gibson Co., 1907, style A

I own a Highland mandolin, which is a factory model Washburn with a guitar company's name on it. It's not as good as a Weber or Gibson, etc., but it's better than some I guess. I don't plan on getting that Weber Bighorn or Gibson F-9 until I'm "worthy" of it. Time to practice! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

In my listing, I meant to list a Rigel G110 (not G5)....the one hand selected my Jimmy Gaudreau at Wintergrass 2000. The
G5, of course, was not being made back in 2000. #By the way,
I wouldn't trade this particular G110 for a G5 today, as it is one of the best mandolins I've played or heard.

New Collings MT. Heee heee!
Paid... well, more than internet prices but I prefer to give
local music stores my business. For later (might need to test drive something else some day, ya know). Plus, this one I could not leave behind and he knew it!

Currently have a Gibson Fern(decent but not exceptional), Apitius(excellent in all respects)and a Gibson MM(didn't know mandos in this millennium could be this good!). Also, am now on Jim Hilburn's list for varnished F model sometime in '07(hopefully). Owned a Bush model until the MM came along that was as good as it gets for the Sam Bush sound. Currently in the hands of a player/teacher in NC who really appreciates it.
