Did any of you hear what Imus said about Bluegrass this morning? He said..there should be no Grammy award associated with BG because Bluegrass is stupid..the people who listen to it are stupid....and he cant believe that anybody actaully listens to it. Plus..he said Monroe should be put in prison. He obviously doesnt know that Bill has passed on.

But...he had only good things to say about Allison K....thinks she is the greatest things since sliced bread except for the Grammy nom. with Robert Plant...he said that album sucked. Dont know..havent heard it.

The guy is a lunatic....hes just dead...and no one has bothered to let him know.

I have the Kraus and Plant album and am not impressed with it all. It seems too forced and awkward if that makes any sense. Kind of like they really wanted to do a collaboration more than produce a strong album.

I'll stay away from comments on Imus. He is what he is.

Does anyone take him seriously? Probably Rutgers basketball players. I can't think of anyone else. I certainly don't.

Who is Imus and, is it possible he's angry because his parents named him Imus? What kind of name is Imus? My appologies if it's an acceptable name in a different country.

I believe that Imus is his last name. Don Imus, possibly

Here's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Imus) the Wikipedia article on Don Imus. He was the morning drive-time disk jockey on WNBC Radio in NYC years ago when I came to the east coast. He was actually pretty funny back then. Howard Stern was the afternoon drive-time jock on the same station. Come to think of it he was funny back then as well.

Don Imus has his good days and his bad days.

He is opinionated -- that's how he makes money.

If I agree with him on a point then he is a well-informed genious on the day --OTOH, if he has a day where he calls bluegrass and bluegrass fans stupid then is an ignorant idiot for that day.

Give me a call if in doubt and I will tell you what kind of shape he is in on any given day. (caveat - I never listen to him 'cause I am not hearing the radio when he is on).

Is there anything else I can help with today?

These kind of guys earn their living by making controversial statements. It's their job. Some folks find it entertaining. Big deal. Let it go. If Bluegrass music suddenly swept the nation in an extreme wave of popularity, they'd be hawking it as their favorite music of all time.

That's funny! (Ironic too)

Change the musical style to "rap" or "modern country" (or some other form), as well as any style-corresponding performer name(s), and the above sentiments are nearly indistiguishable from stuff that has appeared repeatedly right here on the Cafe boards!

Afterthought: Why is this topic posted in General Mandolin Discussions when it obviously belongs in the Bluegrass, Newgrass, Country, Gospel Variants area?

Maybe he's mad caused Howard make a bigger name than he did?
Maybe he just doesn't like the banjo....

I agree with Mike. Imus and Stern were pretty funny back on WNBC.
I can't stand either of them now and don't listen to them unless it's the price I must pay for getting a ride from friends who listen to them in their cars.
(I acknowledge that Howard Stern is very good at what he does and has a quick wit, I just wish he'd use his powers for good instead of evil.)

Too bad his parents didn't name him Dan Imus, since that would provide the letters for a perfectly appropriate anagram, which starts with the letters Dim...

The J-74 Mandolin strings I changed and threw out yesterday have more use to anyone then the pathetic embarrassment that is Don Imus!

I take the Grammys as the industry just patting itself on the back.

pretty much generalized all the self congratulatory award spectacles

What I find amazing is that you were able to understand exactly what Don Imus said. Every time I see him on TV or surf the AM dial, he always talks like he has a mouth full of marbles.

With that being said, this man might have speech impediment or he may have issues with substance abuse. I don't know and I won't go there. He has the right to his opinions (coherent or not) just as I have the right to turn the station or flip the dial.

Yep.

Just be thankful we have/had high-profile types in our corner: Steve Martin, Johnny Carson, et. al. (particularly, that guy et. al.)

He's had some serious health problems for a few years now.
I wonder if the same will happen to Stern?

I never understood the popularity of Imus.
He almost always has a 1 share. When (big) radio Djs get a 1 share they get fired instantly. Imus however, lingers around for 30 years.

He won't pay for this... You can make fun of white, primarily Scotch Irish, male Americans as much as you like. It will be until we get pushy. You might want to complain to the local station. You might want to write a note to Senator Jim Webb from Virginia who's book, Born Fighting, coveres the Scotch Irish american experience.

When I get home, I'm going to throw out all of my Bluegrass collection along with my Mandolins and Guitars. I'm glad Don finally got me to see the light. ;)

You probably don't understand that at one time he had the number one radio show in the New York market, and his 1 share is in which one of the dozen of markets he's in? The guy was making more than the president of the NBC Radio Division in his heyday. If he was pulling a 1 everywhere he prrobably wouldn't have any advertisers. That'sthe bigger piece, if he can generate money for the station he stays employed.

With that said he does have some wonderful charities that he has funded for many years, he's opinionated, half the time I think his opinion is altered for the shock value.

I haven't listened to him in years, honestly he bores me (as does Howard). Howard wouldn't be on if Imus hadn't created the genre and I do admire what Howard has managed to pull off.

I'm shocked he's still alive, he's been close a few times and I'll give the devil his due, he managed to get some action this morning.

Had he said he loved bluegrass we wouldn't be having this conversation.

I make it a policy not to react to people I don't care for making blanket statements about things I do care for. Life's too short to give them my energy. However, I often fail at this! But, not this time.

Scotch is whiskey. I think you meant Scottish.... Not that I care since I like Scotch and I am Irish... I didn't like the Krauss/Plant collaboration either... but I like both their individual music...

The political turn this thread has taken has made it an easy one for the Moderators to shut down. I'll spare the lecture about how thin-skinned, but passionate public responses to "entertainers" and shock-jocks really have no place in the Cafe Discussion Forum.

As you were.
