A few weeks ago i picked up a copy of patty's "sleepless nights."
it's got 14 pure country songs on it. (rare these days)in the notes she says her and hubby emory had been thinking about this for quite a while. Most of the tracts go back decades.
It's such a pleasure to hear stuff like this done again to perfection with country instruments...steel guitar, fiddles, guitars, piano, and drums. Mostly cuts from webb pierce, of course the "possum", conway, hank williams. There's just not a bad song on this cd.
When you hear hanks "cold ,cold heart', and possum's "he thinks i still care", you can close your eyes and see neon signs flashing on and off!
I think this will be the cma country album of the year this fall. I don't think it was out in time for consideration in 2008.
When i hear her do that "blue must be the color" i think that maybe they were separated at birth and that she really is george jones' baby sister!
What soul this girl has!

Yeah, Patty has done a lot of really good stuff, and I know where my "Mountain Soul" CD is, right next to the CD player! I didn't know about the new CD, I'll have to check it out.

"In the deep dark hills of eastern Kentucky That's the place where I trace my bloodline. And it's there I read on a hillside gravestone ...but you'll never leave Harlan alive"
For my money Patty Loveless is the most under rated female singer in country music -- and when she gets togather with some of her singing buddies like Vince Gill and Ricky Skaggs you just can't beat it.
Try this for perfection -- don't dispair Patty will be there:)
Hmmmm.. YouTube won't let you embedd that one here is the link: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRyKg5xMaXA)

If you love REAL country music from the 50's and 60's, this album is a MUST buy. Not only does it have Patty's amazing voice on it, but the arrangements and instrumentation are true to the original style of the songs.
Some of my favorite things on this album so far....
The pedal steel licks emulating Buck Trent's electric banjo licks that emulate pedal steel licks on "The Pain of Loving You".
The Louvin-esque harmonies throughout the album but especially on "That's All It Took".
Webb Freakin' Pierce... "There Stands the Glass"!
Harold Bradley's Tic-Tac Bass.
Can you tell I like this album?
I'mo go listen to it again...
Her voice and style/delivery have always been, and continue to be, remarkable...she's been one of my favorites for a long time, and this offering only makes me love her music more!!

I would like to post one of my favorite performances. I was always a traditional country fan but this really tugged me in the bluegrass direction.
Mr Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain boys, whom I had the pleasure of meeting at a small venue in Harrisbug PA recently.
With Patty singing Pretty Polly...This dramatic song takes my breath away..

She's certainly got the chops. Moreover, she's got a serious load of guts. I can count on one hand the number of "Nashville" artists working to keep REAL country music alive. Patty is at the top of that list. And knock out beautiful, too.

msnyder: And knock out beautiful, too.
I'll say. Her talent is exceeded only by her looks -- or is her beauty exceeded only by her talent?
Whichever she is just the one of the very best -- and I think the same of her friends -- quite a bunch of kids that rolled out of the KY in that period -- Whitley, Loveless, Skaggs et al. -- talent on loan from GOD.
(I'd add Vince Gill but he's from Oklahoma or Texas I think -- still he is one of Patty's key professional friends -- they have put out some great stuff togather).
I can count on one hand the number of "Nashville" artists working to keep REAL country music alive.
That's for dang sure!

I have that video somewhere, I think it was from a bluegrass special on pbs a few years back. I think her fiddle player Carmella Ramsey is awsome as well............Ok..secret crush on her, her husband is guitarist Kenny Vaughn who plays for Marty Stuart, dang that Kenny Vaughn...............Ok he's awsome too....man crush on KV. I have this jeckle & hyde - mando & telecaster thing inside and I would love to play like KV. If you like the patty loveless country album you might also like the one martina mcbride did a few years ago "Timeless" Its pure traditional country.
