I'm an old guitar hack now trying to expand and become a mando hack. My question is, where can one get those little between string grommets to sit between the bridge and tailpiece? Are they mando-specific, or are they something I can pick up at the hardware store? I don't know if I REALLY need them, but they look kind of cool, and I am going to be recording with a fairly sensitive condenser mic, so I don't want any "parasitic harmonics" (as Weber calls them). Thanks a bunch- I've been enjoying my lurking here-

Steve's Silencers for Mandos, they are listed here in the classifieds.

Or you can get an assortment of electrician's grommets for $2.00 at any Radio Shack. That's what I use. They work fine.

You can't buy them anymore, they were made illegal in all 50 states, I had to drive to Canada for mine. Canada's great, eh?

Ah yes, in the words of South Park.

BLAME CANADA!!!!

The debate between a litle guy who sells pure organic rubber grommets in a carefully designed package (that is totally reusable) and a big company that sells vinyl grommets in a random assortment that comes an ordinary plastic one-time use bag.

Do you choose the seemingly cheaper (not actually cheaper when you factor in your time/gas/mental anguish of actually going into a Radio Shack)product or the enlightened and aesthetically superior product?

Plese note that I am highly biased in favor of Steve's silencers.

Also IMHO opinion toitally right. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

[What do these silencers do for you?]

Make me really really wealthy.......???

I use them to damp sympathetic resonances on the strings between the back of the bridge and the tailpiece. I also use them in the headstock behind the nut for the same reasons. If you play with a chop, especially if you have a good dry chop, you will immediately notice what these little buggers do. If you're a strummer, then they won't do much for you.

If you're an ant, silencers make a great inner tube if you happen to fall into a puddle. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
