View Full Version : Fake Book...
After playing out of a worn and tattered Fake book for nearly 3 decades, and going through five or six poor but legal immitations, just to appease my conscience (they've always failed to satify like their illegal predecessor), I'm happy to report Hal Leonard has just come up with the "real" deal!
The Real Book (http://www.halleonard.com/item_detail.jsp?itemid=240221&order=13&catcode=00&refer=search&type=product&keywords=the+real+book+)
I saw a pile of them at NAMM, actually put my grubby paws on them. After I get them in and figure out shipping costs, in addition to its low $24.95 price tag (zounds!), I'm going to sell them on my website.
Yippee, and Yahoo. This has been a long time coming!
I NEVER thought this would happen... Ironically, I can't help feeling that this takes some of the 'mystique' out of quietly requesting the book in small jazz oriented music stores. I think my current one is my second... I'm unsure though - maybe time for a third. Maybe this means good printing quality (FINALLY!). Wow... I think I'm in shock...
Wow, great!! put me down on the list http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Do you know when you get the books?
My Print Music Buyer reports about the 2nd week in August. (Of course, I was left hung out to dry on telling everyone the Ultex Triangles picks were being shipped, but that's another story...)
If all goes well, I'll be able to post a Paypal link that should get one of these to your door (US domestic) for under $30, including shipping.
Funny, we're going to do an "Amnesty" program locally where you trade in your old dog-eared illegal book for a $5.00 credit. This would probably not be cost effective long distance, though.
Count Me in too Ted. This is great! I'll buy when they're in. Any word on whether they'll also be available in Eb or Bb (I play alto and tenor sax too and hate transposing on a gig)?
I'd imagine the Eb & Bb wouldn't be far behind; I'm hoping to see the C's mid August...
Sheesh, Eric. Hot in-demand east coast professional guitarist/mulitinstrumentalist who plays bass, mandolin, AND alto & tenor sax?
I hate you...
Sorry Ted, Its a strange obsession that I have with sound. My wife (who is a clinical psycholgist no less) calls me compulsive. that's just polite for obsessed with music.
My horn playing isn't anything to write home about though. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I have a similar book buy Warner Bros it ain't that bad it has a lot more songs though.
They're finally here!
Limited supply, though:
Real Book (http://members.aol.com/teesch/RealBook.html)
I hope I'm not bursting any bubbles or raining on parades etc etc And the usual disclaimers apply, but there is a cd floating around via snail mail that has like 10 volumes of Real and Fake Books in PDF form. It is a mind blowing number of tunes each pdf is around 500 pages, I'm not offering such a beast because I loaned mine out and don't have a copy on my hardrive but if you know where to look it is out there.
That said I have always wanted a real copy of the real book and this is exciting news thanks Ted...
Does this book have the melody lines (in notation or tab) or is it just chord charts?
In other words, can I learn the melodies to these tunes along with the chords?
Standard notation with chords-no tab.
No lyrics, but chord & melody:
As far as the bootleg CD out there, aside from issues of legality and conscience (subject for another thread, thanks), politely consider the economics...
With 512 songs, assuming you'd use them all (not likely, but really quite a few!), even if you were to print these off from your computer and/or make photocopies, let alone spiral bound, and outside cover, AND the time it would take you to put it all together, I don't think you could do this much cheaper than the 4.8 cents per song this book sets you back.
This really is a spanking deal (whether you get from me or your local dealer).
Saw a post in co-mando a few days ago that had a web site in Germany that has three Real Books online for download in .pdf form.
How could that be legal?
