Is there a source for premade July 9th style side binding or do I just have to laminate my own?

It may come as a suprise, but I don't know what you mean by "July 9th style binding", so I don't know if you can get it premade or not.
If, as I suspect, you mean there is a black line on the side of the instrument near the bottom edge of the binding, I do mine that way, and I laminate them myself.

You have to laminate it....and it's not as easy as it may seem....do not use glue or it will turn into a mess..use acetone

Thanks guys. I will get some acetone and start preparing myself for it. Do you have any suggestions to make it easier?

I have a clamping jig I made, and I've seen where Darryl fits it in the corner of some angled metal, which would have to be very square without any roundover, probably aluminium.
Now, I differ from Darryl about the glue. I use about 2/3 acetone with 1/3 Duco. This makes a compound that clings to the binding instead of acetone running everywhere. The trick is to wipe away all the excess after a few seconds of contact so as not to over-melt the binding, and clamp it well.

My $.02. I use duco and some unknown quantity of acetone, (straight duco used to be thin enough, but not anymore). I lay the thin ivoriod/black binding out flat on a nonstick surface, run a bead of glue down the length, "squish" the ivoroid binding into the glue on edge, and leave it undisturbed 'til dry, not worrying about the glue mess. I've done it that way for ## years, and it works for me.

thanks Sunburst
Do you buy the peghead black and white binding or just buy the black and white stuff and cut/scrape it down a bunch? Thanks again guys, Ryan

I think this is one of those.."do what work best for you deals". Ask questions..think about it and go with what feels right

I do the peghead the same as the body in order to keep the black line on the side of the instrument all the way around. I make the binding the same way only not as wide.
When I want the black line on the front of a peghead or wherever, I buy the I/B/I binding.
I don't have a pic of the side of the peghead handy, but it looks like this from the front with a consistent binding above and below the nut. The side would show the black line on the side of the peghead and fingerboard both.
stew-mac laminating jig works ok. I use acetone only.

Where can you purchase the white binding? I need enough to go around the front of the headstock.
