The fretless 4 string mandolin! I'm trying to decide if that thing was amplified. Not my cup of tea but I bet you could do interesting things with it.

Does not sound like it (the instrument) does either one exceptionally well.

Interesting how that works, Bill. Interesting. ;)

That's what I think. The worst of both worlds. Too many conflicts unsolved - picking and bowing must not happen at the same position on strings, is there a post under the bridge or not...
The bowing sound made my hairs stand up.

Needs a catchy name. "Mandiddle," anyone?

When I was a kid, long before I knew what a mandolin was, I used to pick my violin as if it were a "little guitar." This is sort of the same thing.

I wonder if that is more a matter of the musician than the instrument. My impression is that this someone just starting out, especially with the bow. When I was starting I sounded like that for a year.

I wonder what the instrument would sound like if some like Ray Legere took a turn on it.

Well, I give the guy credit or trying a new idea. Everything's got to start somewhere I suppose.

I think I count 8 strings. (You can hear really them with the bow.)

You might be right! When I first looked, it looked like 4 stings across the 8 posts top and bottom of each side. I was wondering if the weird sound was from amplification but it may have been from paired courses. Regardless, I hope he's having fun with it.

Nobody gives Lloyd Loar grief about plastic concave backs with f-holes in them. The Duolin maker tried something different for a change. Alas, it won't catch on.
