I am having trouble fretting this chord so it rings clearly. Any suggestions? Where do most people their thumb? Any links or pictures out there?

Try starting the finger placement with the little finger and then placing the others. This should make it easier to make the reach.
That being said, I can't really make this chord myself as I have very small, old hands. It's a challenge and there isn't a good substitute chord that I know of.
Good luck,
Bill

Up and over the top of the neck, not curled around but kind of pointing at a 45° angle to the neck.

You mean the 7 5 2 3, D G B G chord ?
for my hand the knuckles are largely parallel with the neck on the treble side, and as a result my thumb points toward the headstock,

slightly different for the 4 5 2 3 , B G B G

[but then again not all hands are the same]

No specific advice, but I just wanted to say that it's not at all unusual that the big chop G isn't coming immediately or easily to you. Your difficulty is absolutely typical of the experience of lots of others. Play the chord every time you practice; practice switching into it from, and out of it to, other chords. For most, a day comes when you can just grab the sucker without thinking about it.
