Hiya all...
I just put on some new Elixer medium strings on my Weber.. and i have to tell you they sound like ####.. just awful.. i hate the sound of new strings but these strings sound just down right raunchy.. I had some Thomastik-Infelds on before and i think i am completely spoiled now.... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif Could this be true.. is string snobbery such a thing?
Please someone tell my new elixer strings will sound better...
Gary
P.s. ordering a new pack of Thomastik-infelds to save the day http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

There was a previous in-depth discussion about the Elixir Nanowebs on another thread and the consensus was that they sound harsh and bright at first but if you play them in for a few days they start sounding great. #I tried them and found this to be true however I went back to my old brand because for me the Nanos felt too soft. #Probably perfect for low action and a light touch. #There are some great players using them so hang in there for a few days and then see what you think.

I have been using the Elixers for awhile, and it does take a few days for the wound and plain strings to sound good together. Reckon it has something to do with the coating. The coating is a good thing in the humidity here. Would probably not use them in a drier climate. Will be trying D'Addario coated strings next.

In the 'for what its worth' column...I've tried the D'Addario's and the Elixirs and found that both require the requisite "couple 'o days break in/stretch out" period before sounding even reasonably OK. #For my taste at least, the D'Addarios (EXP's) got the nod as they ended up sounding and playing more like 'non coated' strings after the break in on my mandolin (Collings MF5)... #My current configuration is EXP's with a couple of spare sets of regular J74's on hand just in case I break a why're! #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/coffee.gif
